It is early Autumn and the lush vegetation of Summer is dying back. The dessicated seed heads of the Hog Weed are slowly being shed and the bracken is turning brown and wizened. Two trusty Black Labradors wait patiently and alert in the rear of their master’s pick-up, anticipating his command, summoning them to work. Nigel Hemming

Once a breed gains a foothold, several factors can spur it on. It helps when the dog in question has a lovely temperament, as Labs do. Also, as more and more families opt for a particular breed, dog breeders respond by increasing the number of litters their dogs produce. This practice lowers the price for a puppy, which also helps speed the breed’s adoption along. A breed’s popularity eventually plateaus when it becomes too common, and thus old hat, and the numbers begin to decline sharply once death and old age catch up with the formerly chic pooches. Unfortunately, this process can be accelerated by the excesses of the breeding industry; disreputable puppy producers can rush to breed dogs without much regard for the animals’ health. This has already been a problem with Labs, which often suffer arthritic hips due to inbreeding.

This anecdote doesn’t reflect well on me, but I stand by the basic principle. When I was about six or seven years old, deeply interested in dogs (as I continue to be), I asked one of my mum’s colleagues what breed she owned. She said a labrador. “Oh, I don’t like those,” I (reportedly) replied. “They’re common.”

Love’s Labradors competes with both the females and the stud labradors to test their soundness, birdiness, steadiness and overall test of time to waterfowl hunting, upland hunting in both flushing and pointing competitions with AKC, HRC and APLA.

We now have Frank a 15 month old Black Lab he didn’t make the grade as a gun dog so he came to us, he is a younger version of Tara our previous dog with all the same traits, the house was empty till he arrived .

Black Labrador Retriever head study giclee print from an original gouache painting by Robert J. May. You may commission a portrait of your own pet from a good photograph – an unframed gouache head study similar to the item listed would cost £150.00.

At around the same time, the fifth Duke of Buccleuch and his brother Lord John Scott started importing dogs from a Newfoundland fishing fleet that sailed into the River Clyde to use as gundogs on the Queensberry estates in the Scottish borders. They had also realised what an extraordinary dog the Labrador was and so established their own kennels in around 1835.

If you give him an outlet for his energy, a Lab will be the best dog you could ever have. If you don’t, you’ll be spending all your time and energy repairing holes in the wall, filling in holes in your yard, replacing chewed-up furniture and worse. Not because your Lab is a bad dog but simply because he has found his own special ways to entertain himself. Don’t give him the chance.

All of those characteristics make the Labrador well-suited to a variety of active families. He’s perfect for homes with rowdy older children, but may be a little rambunctious around toddlers, especially as a puppy or young dog. Singles and couples who love the outdoors also match up well with this breed, and his size and even temperament make the Labrador a great companion for active seniors who love to walk and would appreciate a dog who looks intimidating, even if he is more of a lover than a fighter.

We’re calling it now: Labrador retrievers will be the AKC’s number one most popular dog breed again in 2015, and to show you why they deserve the top spot, here are 14 reasons why Labradors are such awesome dogs:

BBB reports on unauthorized use of the Better Business Bureau’s name and/or logo for as long as the business continues to use it in any advertising, or for one year after the business ceases any repeated unauthorized uses.

Some of us base our vehicle selection on whether it’ll work for toting our dogs along on our adventures, and Labrador owners are well-known for wanting to bring their outdoorsy pups with them. This sticker is a witty nod to that tendency, and at this price point, would make a great stocking stuffer.

Our 16 year old black lab has dwindled from 65-70 lbs down to barely 30lbs and has switched to grazing instead of gobbling his bowl. His eyes and ears are overly productive requiring cleaning every 2 days. I know it’s irritating him because he shakes his head a lot, however because of his decreased muscles he falls down when he shakes his head, as well as randomly when walking. He can’t fetch his ball anymore without falling. He’s blind in one eye, and definitely going deaf. His gas smells of death, his breath horrible. He holds his bm until he has an accident inside. All this and his mind is still that of a pup. He’s been my friend for 12 years and I think we are saying goodbye this week.

One of the duke’s dogs, Brandy, earned his name on his journey across the Atlantic. Having been sent overboard in a heavy sea to fetch the cap of one of the crew, the young dog spent two hours in the water before he could be picked up again, by which point he was so exhausted the sailors had to revive him with brandy.

Commonly called Bloat, this condition is caused by a twisting of the stomach and thus trapping the stomach contents and gases resulting in a rapid swelling of the abdomen accompanied by pain and eventual death if untreated. It is a true emergency, requiring immediate veterinary action. This condition is most often found in large deep chested breeds. Anyone owning a deep chested breed, susceptible to Bloat should be prepared to handle the emergency procedures necessary, including having readily available the name and phone number of emergency clinics and/or who to call after hours.

Labs are a very gentle, patient breed, and with the right socialization and training, get along famously with children. They share a similar zest for life, excitement and love of playing outdoors. As with any pet, however, it’s never a good idea to leave your Labrador retriever and your kids together alone and unsupervised.

SAFETY. For all of her gentle, patient, kindness I still find her to be a great guard dog too. She has great instincts when somebody is acting strangely nearby (she’s flushed a few weirdos out of bushes) and though she is very rarely vocal if she gets “spooked” (i.e. she can hear a noise but the cause is hidden) she will be bold and challenge it. I don’t think burglars would get in without us knowing!

I love Labradors because they live life full-out. No holds barred. They are always over-the-moon excited to see you and have no qualms about showing it. Even if one did once dislocate my jaw showing his affection. It was my fault for getting down on the ground, throwing my arms out towards him, and not properly bracing myself for impact. I shoulda known better.

Lucas you must. I have been an owner now for two years and it is simply the best. Already today, I have had the pleasure of attempting to wash my car as Dudley, my chocolate Labrador ran frenetic and crazy circles around the front lawn with the hosepipe dangling from his mouth. Check out my blog page for more such crazy stuff from him too.

Hip Dysplasia is a genetic disease that affects the hip joints of dogs. (It is also known as degenerative joint disease, arthrosis and osteoarthrosis) and can lead to pain and debilitation in your Labrador. When canine hip dysplasia (CHD) was first described in the 1930s, it was thought to be a rare condition. Dysplasia literally means abnormal, so hip dysplasia literally translates as abnormal formation of the hip socket.Despite years of research and the combined effort of the Orthopedic Foundation for Animals and responsible dog breeders, it has been impossible to eliminate hip dysplasia from labradors.Hip dysplasia can be seen in dogs as young as five or six months of age. In others, symptoms do not develop until after the dog has matured.

Proper collar fit is vital for your dog’s health and safety, yet many dog owners don’t know how to determine whether their dogs’ collars fit correctly. Choose a collar that allows you to easily slip three fingers into the collar without touching your dog’s fur. Of course, you don’t want the collar to be too loose, but it should be one notch away from being able to slide over your dog’s head.

Thanks so much for this wonderful, informative article. My blind daughter is now in NY for a 3-week training with her guide dog, a black lab. She’s so happy with him. I’m so grateful for all the work many people have put into providing, raising & training this dog.

The pair have appeared on television all over the country demonstrating how specially trained dogs can help profoundly disabled people. This week, as they recovered from their ordeal at the Steep home of Canine Partners for Independence, the group who trained Endal, Allen praised his four legged companion: “We’ve given so many demonstrations on how Endal should go into action if I fall out of my wheelchair but last Thursday Endal did it for real” … Endal was voted Dog of the Millennium by Dogs Today readers and Beta Pet Foods, Dog of the Year by the charities Pro Dogs and Pets As Therapy, and was the first ever winner of the Golden Bonio the early years of the breed through to the mid-20th century, Labradors of a shade we would now call “yellow” were in fact a dark, almost butterscotch, colour (visible in early yellow Labrador photographs). The shade was known as “Golden” until required to be changed by the UK Kennel Club, on the grounds that “Gold” was not actually a colour. Over the 20th century a preference for far lighter shades of yellow through to cream prevailed; until today most yellow Labradors are of this shade. Also fawn has been a common colour in the yellow lab variety.[23]

Love exercise? So does your Labrador retriever. Labs are known to be high-energy dogs that can keep going…and going…and going. In fact, it’s important to watch your dog for overheating or exhaustion as Labs are not the best at knowing when to quit. But if you’re looking for a daily partner who loves to run and play as much as you do, you can’t pick a better dog than the Labrador retriever.

Labradors propensity towards obesity means they can often get secondary health problems and orthopaedic diseases such as cruciate ligament rupture. Pet insurance and a healthy bank balance are recommended just in case.

They’re also outgoing. Other breeds such as greyhounds or whippets, for example, are more timid. While I like to think I share plenty of their traits, the Labrador’s lack of shyness is perhaps the one big difference between myself and the breed. People are surprised to hear it, but I am not naturally confident and have bouts of shyness. Labradors are shy of no one. They are will greet all strangers by brandishing a pair of socks and sitting down next to them. I’m not sure if this is done in the hope of food and affection or if it is simply their nature to please, but it is a universal trait.

Raw feeding is not as convenient as kibble feeding and requires plenty of freezer and refrigeration space, a designated preparation surface, and good meat preparation hygiene.  (Just as with meat preparation for people).

Puppies of all colours can potentially occur in the same litter. Colour is determined primarily by three genes. The first gene (the B locus) determines the density of the coat’s eumelanin pigment granules, if that pigment is allowed: dense granules result in a black coat, sparse ones give a chocolate coat. The second (E) locus determines whether the eumelanin is produced at all. A dog with the recessive e allele will produce only phaeomelanin pigment and will be yellow regardless of its genotype at the B locus. The genes known about previously[34] have had their number increased by the introduction of the K locus, where the dominant “black” allele KB is now known to reside.[35] Black or chocolate Labradors therefore must have the KB allele. Yellow Labradors are determined at the E locus, so the K locus is irrelevant in determining their colour. Variations in numerous other genes control the subtler details of the coat’s colouration, which in yellow Labradors varies from white to light gold to a fox red. Chocolate and black Labradors’ noses will match the coat colour.

At 22-24 inches in height and 60-75 pounds in weight for males, and 21-23 inches and 55-70 pounds for females, Labrador retrievers are the perfect size for an active family: Not too big and not too small. Given the right amount of exercise, Labs do okay in an apartment but are best suited for a home with a medium-sized yard.

Yes, they are big. But not too big. And they have unique personalities. Nari will chase a ball until she drops. She hates the lead, will swim in the surf with sharks and run up mountains. Ronda (they reckon she’s my fave) is a princess who hates to get her feet wet, loathes to walk, and loves it best when on the lead at my heel.

The breed tends to shed hair twice annually or regularly throughout the year in temperate climates.[15] Some Labradors shed considerably; however, individual Labradors vary.[27] Labrador hair is usually short and straight, and the tail is quite broad and strong. The webbed toes of the Labrador Retriever make them excellent swimmers. The webbing between their toes can also serve as a “snowshoe” in colder climates and keep snow from balling up between their toes—a condition that can be painful to other breeds with hair between the toes. Their interwoven coat is also relatively waterproof, providing more assistance for swimming.

The Labrador Retriever is one of the most popular breeds in the United States. They were originally bred and used by Newfoundland fishermen to help pull nets and catch stray fish. Hunters later picked them up due to their penchant for “retrieving” game. They are now an adored family pet for their high energy, intelligence, and friendly nature.

Very often dogs find themselves homeless through no fault of their own. Factors such as domestic crisis bereavement, ill treatment and financial problems can all lead to dogs needing new homes. If you are in the unfortunate position that you are unable to keep your dog, you need to make sure it is re-homed professionally, and that its long term future is assured.

My last fury soulmate taught me alot about how to love a dog and how much kindness and true love is a vertue that needs to be kept alive very day and night your with your beloved girl, be it irrespective of a human or otherwise.

Endal, a service dog[98] in Britain. Among other distinctions, “the most decorated dog in the world” (including “Dog of the Millennium”[99] and the PDSA’s Gold Medal for Animal Gallantry and Devotion to Duty),[100] the first dog to ride on the London Eye and the first dog known to work a ‘chip and pin’ ATM card. By Endal’s death in March 2009, he and his owner/handler Allen Parton had been filmed almost 350 times by crews from several countries, and a film of a year in Endal’s life was in production.[101][102]

Keep in mind that the inheritance of temperament is less predictable than the inheritance of physical traits such as size or shedding. Temperament and behavior are also shaped by raising and training.

I have been privileged in life to have had black Labradors for over 20 years. I don’t think I could survive without the love of a black lab by my side. Rosie was our first and was almost 13 when she died. She was the first to come to us and showed me the love of a lab. She was so loyal, loving and giving. Molly died a year ago today. She was 12 and had a long battle with Cushings Disease. Molls was the most softest, sensitive lab ever. She was beautiful in looks and nature. Molls was always slow time and taught me to appreciate life slowly. We are left with little Charlie now 7 years old. She is very naughty and mischievous. Always a tom boy, nothing girlie! Always happy and enthusiastic. The joy a black Labrador is gives is the best thing ever. God bless Moll xxx

I have a black lab named Samson Hudson Sanders…or Sam for short. Such a distinguished name for such an amazing boy. I am mid 30’s and have no children….he is my child. When I work a 12 hr day there is nothing better than coming home to that wagging body! I get slobbered on but it is worth it. They are such loving, loyal creatures. He is 4 and a half now but I remember the day I went to the breeder and of all the dogs (9 of them) to choose from, he chose me and it was love at first eye exchange. He has helped me through so many rough times since that day and I will be forever grateful for him being by my side no matter what. I just wish he didn’t weigh more than me now lol

What I love most about my lab……his kind loving heart of gold! He is a 100 pound cuddlier! He has brought so much joy to our lives after losing our 10 year old lab, 5 years ago. Can’t imagine a day without our boy..Bry!!

An early report by a Colonel Hawker described the dog as “by far the best for any kind of shooting. He is generally black and no bigger than a Pointer, very fine in legs, with short, smooth hair and does not carry his tail so much curled as the other; is extremely quick, running, swimming and fighting….and their sense of smell is hardly to be credited….”[16]

In the 1830s, the 10th Earl of Home and his nephews the 5th Duke of Buccleuch and Lord John Scott,[13][14] had imported of the breed from Newfoundland to Europe for use as gundogs. Another early advocate of these Newfoundland dogs, or Labrador Retrievers as they later became known, was the 2nd Earl of Malmesbury who bred them for their expertise in waterfowling.[13][14]

Several early descriptions of the St. John’s water dog exist. In 1822, explorer W.E. Cormack crossed the island of Newfoundland by foot. In his journal he wrote “The dogs are admirably trained as retrievers in fowling, and are otherwise useful…..The smooth or short haired dog is preferred because in frosty weather the long haired kind become encumbered with ice on coming out of the water.”[16]

The Information Canines of America say their breed ratio is 70 % Labrador retrievers, 15 % golden retrievers, and 15 % German shepherds. Labrador retriever apparel are discovered to be the most effective breed for the job because of their sturdy need to please. They’re additionally the correct dimension, simply adaptable, and simply skilled.

However, the Labrador’s current status as the perfect pet is a far cry from their heritage. They were originally fishing dogs, whose ancestors came from the Portuguese cod trawlers that worked the Grand Banks off Newfoundland in Canada (despite the name, they do not actually originate from Labrador, Canada’s northerly mainland region). The Labrador was the ship’s assistant that would leap into the icy Atlantic Ocean to retrieve pots, lines and nets. It still seems amazing to me that some of the world’s most prolific swimming dogs came from some of the world’s coldest water. But then maybe that was the point. The people had to find an alternative to getting in the water themselves.

Elbow dysplasia is the term for an elbow joint that is malformed on X-rays. The mechanism of the malformation is unclear but it may be due to differences in the growth rates of the three bones that make up the elbow joint, particularly the humerus and ulna. In mildly affected dogs the only consequence may be arthritis. In more severely affected dogs, osteochondritis dissecans (OCD), fragmented medial coronoid processes and united anconeal processes can result from the stress in the joint. Some vets think that these problems may not be secondary but may actually be the primary problems and that the bone changes occur as a result of them. It is difficult to be sure but there does appear to be measurable differences in bone growth in dogs that have elbow dysplasia. There are a number of changes visible on X-rays and the OFA does evaluate X-rays for evidence of elbow dysplasia.

Since we are not dogs, there are other methods to training our pups to keep their piranha teeth off our bodies and personal items. First, we need to look at the types of biting associated with any dog breed. They are:

We became inseparable. Our relationship was made stronger through isolation and the pressures of life on that Outer Hebridean island. When it all became too much for me, Inca and I would retreat together. When, a year later I emerged into the real world, we were a team.

Intelligent but looking for a leader, Labs have been bred to follow human cues, and if they receive the proper training and attention, they make very well-behaved pets that can perform many more commands than “sit”, “stay” and “roll over.”

From its humble origins as a fishing dog in Newfoundland (no, not Labrador!) in the 1700s to rising in popularity as a hunting breed in England in the 1800s to today’s lovable companion, the Labrador retriever is one awesome dog.

The cost of a Labrador Retriever puppy varies depending on his place of origin, whether he is male or female, what titles his parents have, and whether he is best suited for the show ring or a pet home. The puppy you buy should have been raised in a clean home environment, from parents with health clearances and show or working titles to prove that they are good specimens of the breed. Puppies should be temperament tested, vetted, dewormed, and socialized to give them a healthy, confident start in life.

They first came to Europe around 200 years ago when those trawlers docked at Poole in Dorset on their way back to Portugal, and this is where these ‘Little Newfoundland’ dogs were first sighted in Britain. Actually the name Labrador is slightly confusing.

It’ warm it cozy, it’s functional. Our mini Labrador Yellow on left chest is understated and fun. The fabric is 75% cotton/25% poly jersey lined sleeves. Customs and Border Protection Agencies often use Labrador retrievers to detect contraband, especially plant and animal products that, if imported into the country, could cause damage to the native ecosystem and the economy. If you’re wondering, the beagle—also in the AKC Sporting Group—is the other popular dog breed used by government agencies.

Interest in the darker shades of gold and fox red were re-established by English breeders in the 1980s, and three dogs were instrumental in this change: Balrion King Frost (black, born c. 1976) who consistently sired “very dark yellow” offspring and is credited as having “the biggest influence in the re-development of the fox red shade”,[23] and his great-grandson, the likewise famous Wynfaul Tabasco (b. 1986),[24] described as “the father of the modern fox red Labrador”, and the only modern fox red Show Champion in the UK. Other dogs, such as Red Alert and Scrimshaw Placido Flamingo, are also credited with passing on the genes into more than one renowned bloodline.[23]

Labrador retrievers come in different shapes and sizes, colorful, athletic and playful these are among the most popular dogs worldwide. FramedArt.com pays tribute to this amazing dog by providing fans and owners with Framed Labrador Retriever Art featuring them in various stances. They used to be used for waterfowl hunting as they never run out of energy and have distributive attention that makes it virtually impossible for anything to get past them.

It is late August and the heather bloom tinges the grouse moor purple and blue. Three wonderful Black Labs wait eagerly at their masters Land Rover. The two younger dogs pant in excitement and anticipation while their older companion – more experienced, having been there many times before – lies and waits more patiently. Nigel Hemming

I also forgot to note that I myself have a black lab mixed with 1/4 golden retriever. His mother was an american “field” bred chocolate lab, so in theory, he should be more energetic than the average english “bench variety” but he is actually quite mellow, and great with children, and the laziest retriever, lol, especially for a one year old. I’m not sure if the golden mellowed him out or what, but compared to other labs I’ve seen his age, he acts like an old man.

I just adopted a 3yr old Yellow Lab, called Lucy. She has brought so much joy into my family. She is so gentle with my elderly parents, and loves to play hard with me. Our lives have been enhanced so much by her.

“Wanna go for a walk?” If you’re dog is anything like our fur babies, you never even have to finish the sentence. Walking is so much more than just taking them out to do their “business”. It’s about bonding and connecting. Even if they don’t have to go, if you ask them: “Wanna go for a walk?” They’…

They could swim with a rope in their mouth and sometimes – so the stories went – paddled out to the aid of ships in distress. They retrieved whatever their master bade them and dog trading became a lucrative subsidiary for the fishermen.

Remember that a change in diet can upset a dog’s stomach so if you decide to switch brands, do it gradually over the space of a few days by adding a little more of the new food and a little less of the old, each day.

So where did the Labrador actually come from? Their origins are complex, combining Portugal, Newfoundland and Britain in their ancestry. They were originally Canadian fishing dogs, whose ancestors were taken on to work on the Portuguese cod trawlers off the remote Canadian island of Newfoundland.

For the past twelve years West Country artist Caroline Cook has developed an extensive range of limited and open edition equestrian art prints and greeting cards. Her horse paintings and animal portraits have featured on many Christmas cards, ceramics, jewellery and gifts.

Labradors love people and thrive in a busy family. Their fun-loving nature means they are excellent with other animals whether they be cats or other dogs and in some cases with supervision they can live with the smaller exotic pets (rabbits, reptiles and ferrets), so long as interactions are supervised closely.

4. Labs don’t hold a grudge. I have worked with Heart of Texas Lab Rescue for many years. We get Labbies into our program who have been horribly abused, and have every reason to distrust people. But after some love they all come out of their shells and love again.

Now may be the right time to feed raw for you, or it may be the right time to feed kibble. Your circumstances are unique so only you can decide.  For those of you (the majority) that will be feeding kibble.  Let’s look at a few more concerns

The intensity of black pigment on yellow Labradors is controlled by a separate gene independent of the fur colouring.[37] Yellow Labradors usually have black noses, which may gradually turn pink with age (called “snow nose” or “winter nose”). This is due to a reduction in the enzyme tyrosinase which indirectly controls the production of melanin, a dark colouring. Tyrosinase is temperature dependent—hence light colouration can be seasonal, due to cold weather—and is less produced with increasing age two years old onwards. As a result, the nose colour of most yellow Labradors becomes a somewhat pink shade as they grow older.[37]

LOVE LOVE LOVE!! this will now be my go to mug! I love my Labrador, and I love owning little things like this! I absolutely love the cute little saying on this mug. if you love your dog and like owning things that remind you of your dog I definitely recommend this! the cup itself came really protected, the seller definitely wanted this to come in great condition. the cup itself is also very nice and sturdy and the printing looks very great as well. I would most definitely repurchase this if I ever to. highly recommend it!

Breeders should sell puppies with a written contract guaranteeing they’ll take back the dog at any time during his life if you become unable to keep him, and with written documentation that both the puppy’s parents (and if possible, his other close relatives) have had their hips, eyes and elbows examined and certified by the appropriate health organizations. Seek out a breeder whose dogs are active in field trials, hunt tests, agility, obedience and other sports that require athleticism and good health, and not just ribbons from the show ring.

This sweatshirt is a good quality shirt, true to size and as the title says has a great Black Lab picture on it! It was bought as a gift for someone whose dog looks just like the one on the shirt. She loves the shirt! The shipping was prompt and as promised was here in time for Christmas! The seller has a good professional manner and is reliable enough that I would shop from him again.

The most well known health issues are related to the malformation of hips and elbows ( hip dysplasia and elbow dysplasia, respectively). Eye diseases such as progressive retinal atrophy and cataracts are potential concerns. So is exercise-induced collapse, a muscle abnormality that affects the dog’s strength, stamina and movement. Other health problems that may affect the breed include heart disease, an orthopedic problem called osteochondrosis, panosteitis (growing pains), epilepsy and allergic skin disease.

Eye problems are also possible in some Labradors, particularly progressive retinal atrophy, cataracts,[65] corneal dystrophy[62] and retinal dysplasia. Dogs which are intended to be bred should be examined by a veterinary ophthalmologist for an eye score.

9. Labradors look to their humans for help. Labradors derive comfort, security and motivation from their humans. Old Labradors deserve just as much love and attention as puppies. Everyone loves puppies, but senior dogs have spent many more years loving and being loyal to their humans.

Raw feeding is quite a big topic, and it is both complicated and simple. Complicated because we tend to worry about the nutrients our dogs are getting and we can’t see a list of ingredients on a meaty bone.

So how did the affable, otter-tailed Lab become the nation’s No. 1 purebred dog? Its ascent may have something to do with the supersizing of the American home. Prior to the Labrador’s reign, the cocker spaniel held the AKC’s top spot for eight years; before that, the poodle was No. 1 for a remarkable quarter-century. Labs, which can weigh more than 80 pounds and measure 25 inches from paw to shoulder, are Goliaths compared to these breeds. Even the standard poodle, which is bigger than the miniature or toy poodle and can be almost as tall as a Lab, usually weighs 15 to 20 pounds less. And Labs are an infamously rambunctious breed; they need more space to frolic and flourish than poodles or cocker spaniels.

Love, love this T-shirt! Nice cut for the women fits not boxey like a men’s design. It’s a thicker feminine style for the women & cannot see through. Washed & hung to dry, didn’t try the dryer yet. No change in the size if you do this & wash in either cold or warm water. It’s a great design of your best friend that you love so much & proud to tell everyone. I started with the white, no imperfections seen. I truly believe that this shirt will last longer than others due to the quality. Price is definitely appropriate & affordable. I plan to get more colors for the coming spring/summer!

Labradors abilities as sniffer dogs, guide dogs and assistance dogs attest to their high level of intelligence and ease of training. They are very food motivated and love to play, so to them training is a great game and something they love to do.

“Best black labrador retriever ottawa -labrador retriever mix”

Labradors are an intelligent breed with a good work ethic and generally good temperaments. Common working roles for Labradors include: hunting, tracking and detection (they have a great sense of smell which helps when working in these areas), disabled-assistance, carting, and therapy work.[51] Approximately 60–70% of all guide dogs in Canada are Labradors; other common breeds are Golden Retrievers and German Shepherds.[52] Labrador Retrievers have proven to have a high success rate at becoming guide dogs. A study was recently done on how well four different breeds (Labrador Retriever, Golden Retriever, Labrador Retriever/Golden Retriever Mix, and German Shepherds) trained to become guide dogs. In this experiment, German Shepherds had the highest chance of not completing it. Labrador Retrievers and Labrador Retriever/Golden Retriever Mix had the highest success rate. However, German Shepherds and Golden Retrievers had a higher success rate after going through longer training than the training required for Labrador Retrievers.[53][54]

Labrador Retrievers must be well excercised on a daily basis. Whenever possible, this should take the form of running and swimming. Retrieving is at the top of the list of games that Labradors really enjoy, especially through water such as the beach or even a large outdoor swimming pool.

As a result of specialised breeding there are significant differences between field and trial-bred and show-bred lines of Labradors. In the United States the former are sometimes mistakenly referred to as “American” and the latter as “English” although both field and show types are bred in both countries.[39] In the United Kingdom they are called “Field” and “Show”. Dogs bred for hunting and field-trial work are selected first for working ability, where dogs bred to compete in conformation shows are selected for their conformation to the standards and characteristics sought by judges in the show ring.

It’s starting to seem like a doggone forgone conclusion: for the 25th year in a row, the labrador retriever has been found to be America’s favourite dog. American Kennel Club vice-president Gina DiNardo said the Lab – family-friendly, comes in three different colours – “checks all the boxes”.

Hal Herzog, a psychology professor at Western Carolina University, refers to this phenomenon as “cultural drift,” and he believes that parents choose baby names in a similarly imitative fashion. Last year, Herzog and two co-authors published a study of American dog-ownership trends in the Royal Society’s Biology Letters: They concluded that breeds enjoy heydays of approximately 25 years. That time span usually allows for two to three generations of dogs, as the breed transforms from novel to passé. Herzog paid special attention to the rise and fall of the poodle, which at its zenith was even more popular than the Labrador is today: In 1967, there were approximately 250,000 poodles registered in the United States, up from a mere 6,000 in 1952. The number currently stands at 32,671.

As with some other breeds, the Conformation (typically “Show”, “English” or “bench”) and the Field (typically “Working” or “American”) lines differ, although both lines are bred in both countries. In general, however, Conformation Labradors tend to be bred as medium-sized dogs, shorter and stockier with fuller faces and a slightly calmer nature than their Field counterparts, which are often bred as taller, lighter-framed dogs, with slightly less broad faces and a slightly longer nose. However, Field Labradors should still be proportional and fit within American Kennel Club standards. With Field Labradors, excessively long noses, thin heads, long legs, and lanky frames are not considered standard. These two types are informal and not codified or standardised; no distinction is made by the AKC or other kennel clubs, but the two types come from different breeding lines. Australian stock also exists; though not seen in the West, they are common in Asia. These dogs are also very good with children.

As both the most popular breed by registered ownership and also the most popular breed for assistance dogs in several countries, there have been many notable and famous Labradors since the breed was recognised.

Labs typically have litters of six to eight puppies. Most breeders like to keep puppies until they are at least eight weeks old. This gives the puppies time to learn how to behave toward other dogs and gives the breeder time to evaluate the puppies’ personalities so she can place each one in just the right home. A bonus is that puppies of this age are more mature and more easily housetrained.

Those traits are the foundation of the Lab’s personality, but each dog puts his own spin on them. Some are serious, some are clowns, some are reserved, some never meet a stranger. You might hear that Lab personalities vary by color, but it’s more likely that a dog’s temperament is affected by the breeder’s goals. Labs from breeders who produce top-winning field-trial dogs are more demanding when it comes to exercise and training. They are unsuited to lying around the house all day while everyone is at work or school. More laid back Labs typically come from a breeder who shows dogs in conformation.

So the Labrador has gone from being a fisherman’s companion to a specialist wildfowl retriever to the world’s most popular domestic dog. Now, just like Inca, Storm has started joining me as I work but her life is a long way from her ancestors’ who worked those nets off Newfoundland 300 years ago.

You can reduce hair-fall with daily brushing and ensuring their diet is rich in proteins and oils to support skin health and promote hair retention. Apart from daily brushing Labradors are considered relatively low maintenance when it comes to grooming.

Labradors propensity towards obesity means they can often get secondary health problems and orthopaedic diseases such as cruciate ligament rupture. Pet insurance and a healthy bank balance are recommended just in case.

Hello Pippa, our family loves our beautiful HarleeQuinn, a 14 month black english lab. She’s everything all the other posts have described. She entered our lives at 8 weeks and can honestly say there is not a single day she has not made me laugh. She’s the smartest dog we’ve ever had and very loving. I enjoy your website very much. We live in the US and appreciate the tips and also links to US site references. Invaluable.

Labs are active, unless they’re sleeping. It was probably a Lab who inspired the saying “A tired dog is a good dog.” Joint and overall health permitting, be prepared to give a Lab a couple of half-hour walks or runs daily to meet his exercise needs. The best part about having a Lab is that there are any number of fun ways you can provide him with physical activity and mental stimulation. Take him swimming, teach him to run alongside your bike once he is physically mature at 18 to 24 months of age, go hiking, make him the first mate on your boat, or get involved in dog sports such as agility, obedience, rally, tracking, flyball, freestyle — you name it, a Lab has probably done it. However, it’s always a good idea to check with your vet before starting a new exercise program with your dog.

Amazing that I came upon this website tonight–when truly in need. I’m having a real tough time and awfully torn. Our still beautiful (huge) and regal black lab just turned 15 last week and has become more and more incontinent in the last days. He’s having a harder time getting outside–those rear legs not coordinating. The hardest part is that he’s still eating, enjoying his dog biscuits and wagging his tail for us. He does not seem to be in pain, but I know he doesn’t like falling down or finding himself lying in his urine either. I’m finding consolation in the “why wait for the suffering” comments.. I’m thinking I should do something before lots of family (including little grandchildren)arrive for Easter. But then I can’t believe I’m really thinking this. The thought playing God and deciding his exit is overwhelming. We are fortunate to have a traveling vet in the area who euthanized our previous dog 15 yrs ago—and think I’m ready to give her a call to do the same. I am so, so sad and conflicted!! Any words of wisdom and encouragement would sure be welcomed

Some of us base our vehicle selection on whether it’ll work for toting our dogs along on our adventures, and Labrador owners are well-known for wanting to bring their outdoorsy pups with them. This sticker is a witty nod to that tendency, and at this price point, would make a great stocking stuffer.

The Labrador Retriever has consistently ranked as the most popular purebred dog in the United States for more than 10 years, according to the American Kennel Club. The AKC registers more than a hundred thousand new Labrador Retrievers each year, but when you take into account all the Labs never registered at all, or registered with another organization such as the United Kennel Club, the popularity of this stable, family-friendly dog is truly staggering.

In case you learn the lyrics to Led Zeppelin’s “Black Canine,” you will discover it’s mysteriously not about canines in any respect. The band named the track after a Labrador retriever apparel that was wandering across the Headley Grange studio whereas they had been recording the album Led Zeppelin IV.

It is not only their amazing sense of smell (which can be 10, 000- 100,000 times more sensitive than ours), but their love of a game, intelligence, willingness to please and ability to be constantly motivated by food rewards that makes the Labrador such an ideal working dog.

Labrador retrievers have a long history of being service dogs, whether by detecting contraband or acting as sight dogs or helping people with day-to-day tasks. Labs have been shown to have the most success as guide dogs worldwide. Guide Dogs of America reports that 70% of their guide dogs are Labs.

Please try to be fairly ‘open minded’ about the sex, colour and age of the dog you are looking for. There is certainly no ‘average’ rescue Labrador and both dogs and bitches are loyal and make wonderful companions. Although we maintain a policy of privacy between our owners, we will offer you as much information as possible. A settling in period is essential for rescued dogs and we will support you through this. However, you might expect some difficulties in the early stages. You could be lucky and get a Saint !! Whatever the temperament of your new dog, we recommend that you take him or her to training classes, as this is a good place to learn about each other.

The brutal, heartbreaking reality of having a dog of course is that we will inevitably outlive our beloved hound. Losing Inca was like losing a limb. She’d had a good life. She lived to 12. I cried for a week. I suffered panic attacks. Only those who have loved a dog will understand the grief. We scattered her ashes in the park and she has a sapling dedicated to her, Inca’s Tree. I hang a Bonio biscuit from it on her birthday each year.

The genes responsible for coat colour in Labradors mean that black dogs can throw yellow puppies, black puppies or chocolate puppies. If two yellow dogs are mated, they will always have yellow puppies, but if two brown dogs are mated they can have yellow or brown puppies but not black. Often breeders have their dogs genotyped to identify which genes each dog carries, so they can get certain colours. The chocolate colour is the most difficult to get and therefore the rarest of colours.

Although they will sometimes bark at noise, especially noise from an unseen source (“alarm barking”), Labradors are usually not noisy[15] or territorial. They are often very easygoing and trusting with strangers and therefore are not usually suitable as guard dogs.[15]

Short, thick, dense and weather resistant coat in black, yellow, chocolate. There are sometimes other variations of colors that occur from certain types of breeding. However, these colors are not recognized by the AKC therefore not following the best breeding practices for Labrador Retrievers.

Fortunately for folks afraid of canines, Labrador retriever apparel researchers are growing a machine to do the sniffing. The canines are costly to coach, and might solely scent a sure variety of samples a day, so automating the method can be best. An digital nostril is at the moment in manufacturing to chop out the price of canine coaching.

Especially if introduced as puppies, labs are known to generally get along well with other dogs. As with any changes to your family/pack, it’s important to watch for signs of aggression early on. If introducing an adult dog, consider choosing a neutral space such as a park for the first meeting to sidestep any territorial instincts.

At 4 months of age, our own Lab, Dakota, was relaxing in the backyard with me. We both heard a noise from behind us and turned to see a 7-year old boy standing a couple of feet from us. Both of us jumped and both of us were not happy. Even though the boy had come over to see the puppy, he did so in a manner that scared Dakota so badly that she became fearful of any boy around that age. As soon as she sees one, the fur on her back will stand up and she will bark wildly. Is she aggressive? No, she is not. How do we know that? Simply because her tail is wagging wildly as well and she backs away from the boy. In order to combat this fear, we bring her to places with other people in varying ages and when we see a little boy, we ignore her behavior. We then tell the boy to talk to us for a minute while ignoring Dakota’s action. After a minute of us ignoring her, she slowly creeps towards the boy, sniffs him, and then starts to lick his hand. It is only at that point do we allow the boy to pet her. This has been going on for several months now and Dakota is almost perfect around little boys now. This never did turn into fear biting because we worked immediately to reprogram her fear and show her there was nothing to be afraid of. Had we not done so, it could have easily turned into fear biting.

Any words of wisdom and encouragement would sure be welcomed

we lost our lab 2 years ago she was 13 years old we had her for the last 5 years of her life prior to that she had been a working dog but due to Arthritis had to retire she was a freebie. She was a marvellous companion always ready for a walk and to play with the grand children, clean around the house everything a lab is known for. We were devastated when we lost her. When my wife was ill Tara was her constant companion she knew when the wife was having a bad day it was uncanny

Arthritis is a common condition amongst elderly Labradors, but it can be helped with the right pain medication and on occasions surgical intervention. There are also various ways you can make your arthritic Lab more comfortable at home, which we will look at a little later on.

Thanks for sharing your wonderful story. You and your Mum have a special bond that will sustain the two of you through good times and the not so good times. My beloved Ms. Shasta & Mr. Shaq nursed me through a bout of cancer by being there for me. Just seeing their faces each day gave me the strength to make it through the day. Though they have crossed the Rainbow Bridge, they continue to inspire me to carry on. So hugs to you Loki and to your Mum.

My two (well, labrador and Labradoodle) and they are the most caring dogs I have ever meet, they know when something isn’t right and both give you cuddles as if to say all will be ok. I love them to bits!!

I work in health care and there are days when you have no choice but to sit with someone while they die. A part of you dies every time you do that. when I come home…he reminds me of how happy life can be. He gives me a reason to hold on to everything that is good in life. Without my lab I am not sure I would be the same person. He is sitting at my feet right now, as I type this, and my foot is now numb from the weight of his heavy head but I wouldn’t want to be anywhere else than right here with my “little” man.

We now have Frank a 15 month old Black Lab he didn’t make the grade as a gun dog so he came to us, he is a younger version of Tara our previous dog with all the same traits, the house was empty till he arrived .

Labrador Retrievers are registered in three colours:[26] black (a solid black colour), yellow (considered from cream to fox-red), and chocolate (medium to dark brown). Some dogs are sold as silver pure-bred Labradors, but purity of those bloodlines is currently disputed by breed experts including breed clubs and breed councils.[30][31] Some major kennel clubs around the world allow silver Labradors to be registered, but not as silver. The Kennel Club (England) requires that they be registered as “Non-recognised.”[32] Occasionally, Labradors will exhibit small amounts of white fur on their chest, paws, or tail, and rarely a purebred Lab will exhibit brindling stripes or tan points similar to a Rottweiler.[33] These markings are a disqualification for show dogs but do not have any bearing on the dog’s temperament or ability to be a good working or pet dog.

Licensing information is provided in the BBB Business Profiles to inform the public about industries that may require professional licensing, bonding, or registration. Better Business Bureau encourages you to check with the appropriate agency to be certain any requirements are currently being met.

They’re a little bit crazy. In a nice way.  My Labrador, Monty is unpredictable. I can be on the phone and he’ll walk right up to me, and for no reason whatsoever, lick my face then walk away…..kind of a drive-by licking. Weird but I love it!

Labradors abilities as sniffer dogs, guide dogs and assistance dogs attest to their high level of intelligence and ease of training. They are very food motivated and love to play, so to them training is a great game and something they love to do.

I love to make a connection with anyone who views my art by touching a shared sentiment. I hope it makes you smile. Pets bring us so much joy. That spirit is what I mean to share, celebrate and commemorate.

It has been shown that out of all dog breeds, it is the Labrador Retriever that is most likely to be obese.[71] In a 2016 published study it was shown that out of 310 Labradors, most were missing all or parts of the POMC gene. This gene plays a part in appetite regulation as well as indication of the amount of one’s stored fat. The study concluded that the absence of that gene had a significant impact on Labrador weight and appetite.[68][71] The POMC gene mutation is present in only one other breed – the Flat-coated Retriever.[68]

At the time, the River Stour was habitually liable to overflow in winter, creating large watery meadows several feet deep; for half the year it was, as one observer put it, ‘a minor Venice’. No wonder he was fascinated by the amazing water dogs he discovered in nearby Poole – they were excellent at retrieving downed game from the flooded meadows – and he promptly started a breeding programme.

As they were originally bred to help retrieve fish and pull fishing lines to shore, Labrador retrievers instinctively love water, so if you love to swim, there’s no better buddy than a Lab to take with you to the beach.

My daughter brought Lucy, a chocolate english lab home January of 2015. Lucy absolutely took everyone’s heart over in short order. Tail always wagging, always ready to play frisbee, fetch, tug of war, swim, take a bath, go for a walk and on and on.

Weight Management. Labradors are prone to overeating which can lead to a higher risk of orthopaedic disease (such as a cruciate ligament tear that will set you back $3000-$5000 for surgery) and a shortened life span.

You can avoid some negative traits by choosing an ADULT dog from an animal shelter or rescue group. With an adult dog, you can easily see what you’re getting, and plenty of adult Labrador Retrievers have already proven themselves not to have negative characteristics.

It is important that after the pup stops biting, you replace the object of objection with something it should chew on. As soon as the pup bites down on this other object (toy, bone, etc), praise it using a very happy and higher pitch voice. This practice is considered positive training and instead of teaching the pup what not to do, you are replacing a negative action with a positive action. After a while, you will just have to say “No Bite!” and the pup will automatically release upon command.

I’ve since had three Labradors in my life, and what attracts me most is that happy-go-lucky, bouncy, tail-wagging demeanour. They project a euphoria I find contagious. It’s a refreshing antithesis to the cold modern world, and part of the reason I decided to write a book about these magnificent creatures.

Labrador Retrievers, more commonly known as Labradors or ‘Labs’, love to be with their family. They are high energy dogs that need lots of exercise and training, particularly when they are young. Being one of the most popular breeds Labradors wear many ‘hats’ from working dog to companion animal. As a breed they are fun-loving, even-tempered and ideal for families that consider their dog to be part of every day life.

The first written reference to the breed was in 1814 (“Instructions to Young Sportsmen” by Colonel Peter Hawker),[11] the first painting in 1823 (“Cora. A Labrador Bitch” by Edwin Landseer),[11] and the first photograph in 1856 (the Earl of Home’s dog “Nell”, described both as a Labrador and a St. Johns dog).[19] By 1870 the name Labrador Retriever became common in England.[11] The first yellow Labrador on record was born in 1899 (Ben of Hyde, kennels of Major C.J. Radclyffe),[11] and the breed was recognised by The Kennel Club in 1903. The first American Kennel Club (AKC) registration was in 1917.[11] The chocolate Labrador emerged in the 1930s,[11] although liver spotted pups were documented being born at the Buccleuch kennels in 1892.[11] The first dog to appear on the cover of Life Magazine was a black Labrador Retriever called ‘Blind of Arden’ in the December, 12th, 1938 issue. The St. John’s dog survived until the early 1980s, the last two individuals being photographed in old age around 1981.[19]

IMPECCABLE MANNERS. My girl has the manners of a Victorian gentleman. Some have developed with training but some seem to have been innate; she has never pushed on the stairs, rarely at the door. She waits to have her feet wiped when we come in. She’ll flirt with passers by but she waits for an invitation to say hello. When treats are being given out other dogs snatch and push but she waits patiently at the back with that sweet smile on her face. She has never tried to steal from my plate and won’t steal another dog’s ball. Once she jumped on the sofa to fuss my now ex and when I joked where was I going to sit she actually scooched over to make room!

Our Sugar is now 14 years old and unfortunately has to be put down on Saturday. She is our family’s whole world and we are going to miss her – her sweet, gentle nature and irrepressible optimism and her absolute believe that there will always be more food in her bowl 🙂

Labs love to put things in their mouths! They have to be watched very carefully when they are young so they don’t eat anything that could be dangerous. They can also eat your mom’s dining room table, so keep an eye on your growing puppy! There’s one thing that almost all Labs want you to know about them – they love to play fetch. Throw a ball and watch them run!

According to Herzog’s model, the Labrador has another decade or so atop the AKC’s list before it yields to a new No. 1 hound. But already, a backlash against large dogs seems to be taking shape. According to the AKC, the oft-maligned Toy group is making a comeback of sorts: The registration list’s biggest climbers these days are the Chinese crested and the Brussels griffon. An AKC spokeswoman opined that this might have to do with all those celebrities who walk around with teensy pooches in their purses, but Herzog’s analysis suggests otherwise. More likely it’s just another inexplicable product of cultural drift: Twenty years hence, the Yorkshire terrier could be the most popular breed. And people will think Yorkies are tough as nails, while Labs will be dismissed as chew-happy slobs.

Some Labs like to get to know new people before becoming their friend. So as your dog grows up, be sure to take him lots of places. Socializing your pup from an early age will help him become comfortable wherever he goes.

For the heavy-set Labradors preferred by show breeders in the United States and the United Kingdom, the Labrador Retriever Club, Inc. offers information as well as breeder and rescue referral. For the middle-weight show-type Labradors preferred in most other countries, the National Labrador Retriever Club also offers such information and referrals. the leaner, field-type Labradors who are best suited to more athletic endeavors, Retriever Training Forum offers breeder classifieds.

Remember that after you’ve taken a new puppy into your home, you have the power to protect him from two of the most common health problems: obesity (which makes joint problems even worse) and eating inappropriate objects. Keeping a Lab at an appropriate weight has been proven to add two additional years of life, and close supervision of what he’s chewing on can save you big bucks at the veterinary hospital. Make the most of your preventive abilities to help ensure a healthier dog for life.

In the United States, the American Kennel Club (AKC) and the Labrador’s breed club have set the breed standard to accommodate the field-bred Labrador somewhat. For instance, the AKC withers-height standards allow conformation dogs to be slightly taller than the equivalent British standard.[43] However, dual champions, or dogs that excel in both the field and the show ring, are becoming more unusual.[44]

Artist Kay Johns was born in Hertfordshire, England in 1964. She spent most of her childhood around horses, riding around the beautiful Chiltern Hills and surrounding countryside. Always having a house full of pets, and an extreme passion for painting and drawing, painting pets and wildlife was an obvious choice of subject matter.

I grew up with labs and my mom always loved the yellows the best, saying they were more mellow. I got my black lab Alice when I graduated high school, who is now 7, and she is the sweetest and friendliest, most beautiful dog! She is always so happy and she does have a lot of energy, so we go to the park to throw her frisbee discs as often as possible. She just has such a wonderful personality and it makes me really love the blacks. I would recommend them, or yellows, for a home family pet because they do so well with children and prove to be very loyal and protective.

It arrived on time, and wasn’t damaged or bent. It is great quality and perfect for any hunting dog lover or lab lover. Got this for my Father, and he loved it and hung it on his wall the same day. We have always had a yellow lab and black lap. If you are on the fence on getting this, do it. You will not be un-happy about it.

I am thinking very seriously about adopting a female Golden Labrador retriever this coming September, she will be bought as a puppy so I can have longer with her , This will be my first experience with owning a dog of my own although not the only time In my life I’ve looked after a dog.

I lost my black lab Daytona to kidney failure. She was a rescue and the center of my world. It happened very quickly and devastated me. My husband and I decided to join a local rescue and adopted our twin, litter mates, Coco and Wonka. I said I could not do black again so we did chocolate. They have filled a huge whole in my heart. No matter how bad a day they are there to love and kiss and nothing comes better than two.

Registered Puppies have the guarantee up to 30 months for any Hip and Elbow Dysplasia, PRA-PRCD, RDOSD, EIC, CNM, and Refractory (near sightedness). If any puppy is proven to have any of these diseases, the owner has the option to keep the dog but you must neuter your dog. Most owners have grown attached to their dog and I understand this. I will be happy to give you another puppy out of a similar breeding at your convenience. I strive for the best breeding possible, but as much as I may strive, Mother Nature has her own course and with that being said this means that oddities do happen occasionally. I apologize now if this ever does happen to you. Trust me as much I love these 4-legged Angels on this Earth more so than humans, I will be just as upset if not more, over your dog having anything at all wrong with it.

I enjoyed reading all the beautiful stories. My heart was broken Nov.29,2018 when my best Buddy passed suddenly at age 8 1/2. He helped me through some very dark times. Was there for me always. It is 3 months and I cry even writing this. One morning we woke and he didn’t want to stand. I’m handicap and spend most of my day in a recliner or scooter. I can walk some. I mention this because it took every ounce I had to put a towel under him to try & raise him. No can do. I rolled him on a rug and pulled him into a room that I could get down close to him. While I tried for 2 hours to call people I knew to help me. For some reason noone was there. I tried to get the attention of garbage truck drivers, fed ex drivers. But noone. He laid in my arms took deep breaths and passed away. Buddy was my everything. He would get me up when I fell, lay next to me when I was sad or to calm me. Gently kiss my tears away. Steady my when needed. Bring me things I needed (and sometimes things I didn’t need lol) My shadow in being and heart. My niece trained him for me. He was not purchased knowing I would need him for therapy needs. But, when my life took a dramatic change he was there always. Don’t know how to heal from this. He had a strange quirck that we never understood. He could hear/see the white streaks very high in the sky that airplanes left. He would bark at them obsessively. He saw/heard them before we could. We could never hear them & barely see the white steak. Buddy was my everyday companion for my 12+ hours I was aloan everyday & through the rest of the night. Don’t know if color made any difference. Buddy was a red fox color. Loved kids, cats, dogs LIFE. Saved me & my 1 year old grand daughterfrom a person coming into our home by barking a bark I had never heard before until police got there. He was the perfect sweet boy. I lay here today reading all what has been said and my husband wants to take me to look at puppies. My family is worried that I’m so sad without him. But, no new lab regardless the type ‘English or American’ ‘Red fox, black, yellow, chocolate or silver’ will be my ‘Buddy’ But maybe in time it he or she will become a buddy to me. Not sure I’m ready but will look. In any case, in my opinion after owning many dogs in my 60 years. You can’t go won’t with the most beautiful breed as the Labrador.

Look into a labrador’s eyes. Love comes back. Labradors are a perpetual version of how your favourite 13-year-old son (yes, like my dogs, I have favourite children) was before he entered the dark tunnel of adolescence and decided to hate you. They are highly intelligent and happiest by your side, quizzically examining the people and other dogs around them.

11. Labradors thrive on encouragement. Positive reinforcement training has been shown to have far better results in modifying a dog’s behavior than harsh training methods. Researchers suggest training your dog well and early on to avoid any problems with aggression.

The Labrador Retriever serves many practical and useful purposes. It helps authorities in rescue and detection, the disabled as a guide dog, and hunters in tracking and retrieving water fowl. Yet, its pleasant, even-keeled, fun-loving nature makes it a great family pet. If you’re in search of Labrador Retriever gifts for dog lovers, you will find a wide variety here at Animal Den.

Most puppies will not show aggression at a very early age. This is mostly a learned behavior over time. Hence, when small puppies bite, they bite out of fun, playfulness, teething, or the need to have something in their mouth. At first it may be cute, but it should be corrected immediately since it will not be as cute when they are a 70 lbs. adult Lab! Puppies should be taught from a young age never to mouth or bite humans. How do you do this? Well, based on our experience, there are a couple of steps to curb this type of behavior. When a puppy bites, first use a sharp tone and say “No Bite!” If the puppy continues to mouth or bite, grab the back of its collar with your other hand and give a quick/sharp tug and say “No Bite!” again. The tug action should only serve to startle the pup and not hurt it in any way. It may take 4-5 times in a row of performing the tug action while saying “No Bite!”, but the pup will understand quickly that when it bites you, it receives something it doesn’t like (the tug action).

Now you can show allegience to your dog’s breed, and support their diabolical World-Domination plot, with WOOF- Obey the Pure Breed! propaganda featuring dog poster art by Kevin McCormick. Show family, friends, and co-workers that when the pure breed dogs take over, you will be spared as one of “the lucky ones.” Breed specific dog propaganda including: t-shirts, posters, coffee mugs, postcards, gifts, and more!

Today, their temperament recommends the Labrador retriever as family pets, since the dogs are outgoing, pleasant and kind. They mature at a relatively late age, which makes them behave like puppies long after most of their counterparts no longer exhibit the same energy levels. Framed Labrador Retriever Art will rarely depict the dog sitting idle, which comes as no surprise given the fact that they burst with energy. They are also famous for their excellent sense of smell, that led military and police forces to use them in missions that involve the tracking of smugglers or prohibited substances.

Labrador Retrievers must be well excercised on a daily basis. Whenever possible, this should take the form of running and swimming. Retrieving is at the top of the list of games that Labradors really enjoy, especially through water such as the beach or even a large outdoor swimming pool.

Before the age of two or three, many Labradors can be extremely active and destructive despite their breed reputation for calm dispositions. It’s in their extended adolescence that many Labradors find appeal in swallowing rocks, socks and Barbie dolls, all of which — and more — have been surgically removed from these dogs.

The Lab has a double coat — a soft, insulating undercoat topped with a short, hard, protective outer layer. Labs shed heavily, and brushing them once or twice a week will help keep the fur from flying.

Since we are not dogs, there are other methods to training our pups to keep their piranha teeth off our bodies and personal items. First, we need to look at the types of biting associated with any dog breed. They are:

The most excellent dog will be longer than it is tall, with mountains of scruff about its face. Either that or it will be small and proud and brave, with a tail that points straight up. It will be as neat and tidy as an English squirrel – or it will leave all its fur on your couch, to remind you that you’re terrible at discipline.

I love Labradors because they live life full-out. No holds barred. They are always over-the-moon excited to see you and have no qualms about showing it. Even if one did once dislocate my jaw showing his affection. It was my fault for getting down on the ground, throwing my arms out towards him, and properly bracing myself for impact. I shoulda known better.

As both the most popular breed by registered ownership and also the most popular breed for assistance dogs in several countries, there have been many notable and famous Labradors since the breed was recognised.

I love My lab, Garth Milo because he is the joy of our life. He actually thinks he is human, he is always by our side, sleeps with us, cuddles with us. He is very emotional and I swear he thinks he is human. he loves the water sooo much and so do we. Garth is our son. LOL Garth is the inspiration for Pups the Traveling Labrador. We wanted Pups to travel the globe and he wants to share what he sees around the globe with others. Pups loves to spread good will and cheer to others. When we get home and hug Garth, all of our troubles are gone.. LABRADORS RULE!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Size – American Labs generally run larger (weight wise) than their British counterparts and are, on average, 10-20 pounds heavier than British Labs. The British Labs will generally run 50-70 pounds depending on whether you have a male or female, while American Labs are typically 60-90 pounds.

Many of the Labradors we are asked to re-home come to us because of changed family circumstances and most are well cared for and in good health. Some however, are old and infirm and need a good retirement. Others DO HAVE PROBLEMS, but in the right home can blossom into happy dogs again. As Labradors are sociable animals and enjoy company we will not usually home a dog where it will be left alone for more than 3 or 4 hours a day.

Unless you currently own a dog, our Helper will probably be accompanied by one of his/her own Labradors. Providing everything is satisfactory, you will then be placed on our register. However, the time it will take us to find you the right dog is likely to be determined by the number of preferences you stipulate, eg age, colour or sex. Nonetheless the right dog could come along very quickly, so be prepared!

Hi I have three dogs a springer spaniel a wire haired daschund and a black lab, they are all great friends. My lab was born with elbow and hip dysphasia ,he is now five,He is such a lively boy and loves to fetch tennis balls,I can’t throw them for him ,as it jars his joints so I spend lots of time hiding them so he can find them.It has been very difficult to stop him running too much and playing with other dogs as he is like most labs very sociable.I have always had recall problems ,I bought your book total recall and found it very helpful ,today he came back to.the whistle while playing with another dog!!!!

Unfortunately, this process can be accelerated by the excesses of the breeding industry; disreputable puppy producers can rush to breed trendy dogs without much regard for the animals’ health. This has already been a problem with Labs, which often suffer arthritic hips due to inbreeding.

I have had the honor of having four labs in my life ! Dixie , Misty , Kody and now Cheyenne . I have had two black and two yellow ones . I am totally sold on labs as a breed ! They are a cling-on , you can’t sneak anything by them ! They watch you all the time and walk with you from room to room . You couldn’t ask for a better companion ! I have never seen them in a bad mood or cross ! I live out in the country and never had to put a lead on any one of my dogs . They never ran away and I never had to chase one down ! They would stay close or walk with me . Maybe they thought they would loose out on a meal ? God , they love to eat , they will eat anything ! I had one , that would go steal an ear of old field corn off the stock and field strip it on my front porch and chew on it ! I never seen a breed of dog that loves so strong as a lab . When you go to visit some one , they like every one there . When you say your good byes and open that car door they are ready to go ! You aren’t leaving me , dad ! The money I have paid for my dogs was really cheap , complared to all the joy and love they have given to me ! They are a well rounded breed , the do anything dog as long as they are with you ! You are their life , their whole world revolves around you ! They are selfless , love to work and to please . I have friends ask me what are you doing on vacation ? I tell them I am going hang out with the dog , she really good company ! I wish I had more time to give her !
