I love Labs because they make you smile. Even when they are bad, I still want to hug them and kiss them and give them cookies. You can have the worst day ever, and come home to two happy, wiggly-waggly Labbies…and all of a sudden you don’t feel mad or sad anymore. I also love them for many other reasons, most of which all of you have already stated. Thank you for letting me share…:)

Black Labs, Chocolate Labs and Yellow Labs, portrayed by Nigel Hemming. Nigel Hemming is regarded by many as one of the country’s leading painters of working dogs – his images often bearing a narrative theme. He says that he tries to paint pictures not simply of dogs, but about them. The appeal of his work led to his being presented with the Fine Art Trade Guild Published Artist Award in 1996.

The Labrador Retriever originated in Newfoundland, Canada and is believed to have descended from the now extinct “St. John’s Water Dog”. Labrador Retriever’s where trained to help retrieve fishing nets from the icy cold waters of the North Atlantic. Their dense, water-repellant coats, swimming skills and hard working nature made them the perfect dog for this task. In the early 19th century, the Duke of Malmesbury began breeding Labrador Retrievers in England. He was also responsible for name “Labradors”. Labs where first recognized by The British Kennel Club in 1903 and the American Kennel Club in 1917. I have been privileged in life to have had black Labradors for over 20 years. I don’t think I could survive without the love of a black lab by my side. Rosie was our first and was almost 13 when she died. She was the first to come to us and showed me the love of a lab. She was so loyal, loving and giving. Molly died a year ago today. She was 12 and had a long battle with Cushings Disease. Molls was the most softest, sensitive lab ever. She was beautiful in looks and nature. Molls was always slow time and taught me to appreciate life slowly. We are left with little Charlie now 7 years old. She is very naughty and mischievous. Always a tom boy, nothing girlie! Always happy and enthusiastic. The joy a black Labrador is gives is the best thing ever. God bless Moll xxx

I breed Labrador Retriever puppies that are 100% birdy in the field by age 6 months with a bird desire and willingness to learn by your methods and not be on their own agenda. By producing Labrador Retriever puppies that are American Field plus some lines have half English or British, Scottish or Irish lines in there to help balance the steadiness out in the field as your hunting partner or at home with a level head. Love’s Labradors believes in the original look of the Labrador 100 years ago with a nice blocky square head, balance structure to the body, otter tails along with natural hunting instincts that also makes it easy enough for an average person to train.

Love’s Labradors puppies are whelped at home within a few steps from the bed. I find that the personal and constant touch 24/7 helps insure a stable and well socialized labrador retriever puppy coming home with you. At the time of the puppy deposit agreement \ is agreed upon this includes the 30 month guarantee for all the above testing listed. I email a labrador retriever puppy health form that states the home preparations needed for your new puppy, the need for above board cleanliness and sanitation, shots and worming schedule for both puppies and Mom to take in with you to your Vet at first puppy visit which I recommend within 72 hours in getting home. I follow-up after the puppy is home with you to make certain all is going perfect and to answer any further questions you may have.

Interest in the darker shades of gold and fox red were re-established by English breeders in the 1980s, and three dogs were instrumental in this change: Balrion King Frost (black, born c. 1976) who consistently sired “very dark yellow” offspring and is credited as having “the biggest influence in the re-development of the fox red shade”,[23] and his great-grandson, the likewise famous Wynfaul Tabasco (b. 1986),[24] described as “the father of the modern fox red Labrador”, and the only modern fox red Show Champion in the UK. Other dogs, such as Red Alert and Scrimshaw Placido Flamingo, are also credited with passing on the genes into more than one renowned bloodline.[23]

My mum was mortified. I went on to save my weekly pocket money for five years for enough to buy a Hungarian vizsla, a breed that was once favoured by Hungarian royalty and looks like it. It made #32 in the AKC list, two spots higher than its 2014 ranking, and frankly if it gets any higher I might have to trade her in for a more obscure model.

I’m talking in broad brush strokes, but generally society has become more cynical and suspicious. When was the last time you said good morning to a stranger on the Tube? A Labrador wouldn’t dream of missing the opportunity to say hello and will always give strangers the benefit of the doubt. It’s an attractive trait, although, of course, there’s always the hope that you might also have a biscuit in your pocket.

Many of the Labradors we are asked to re-home come to us because of changed family circumstances and most are well cared for and in good health. Some however, are old and infirm and need a good retirement. Others DO HAVE PROBLEMS, but in the right home can blossom into happy dogs again. As Labradors are sociable animals and enjoy company we will not usually home a dog where it will be left alone for more than 3 or 4 hours a day.

However, despite this, and despite some of the wilder claims made by some raw feeding enthusiasts, it would appear that most Labradors do thrive on kibble and it is an extremely convenient way to feed your dog.

4. Labs don’t hold a grudge. I have worked with Heart of Texas Lab Rescue for many years. We get Labbies into our program who have been horribly abused, and have every reason to distrust people. But after some love they all come out of their shells and love again.

Some people leave food down for their dog’s to ‘graze’ on.  I prefer my dogs to eat their meals up fairly quickly, and have found that some dogs are more likely to be ‘picky’ if they know they can come back to their dinner later on.

  1. The transition back to city life was tough for both of us but together we resettled. She accompanied me on photo shoots and TV shows but her greatest coup came when she helped find me a wife. It was 2004 and we were walking together in Hyde Park when I spotted a beautiful blonde girl running with her Labrador Maggi. It was fate, and Marina and I married with marzipan figurines of the two Labradors on our wedding cake. The dogs even came on our honeymoon.
Labradors propensity towards obesity means they can often get secondary health problems and orthopaedic diseases such as cruciate ligament rupture. Pet insurance and a healthy bank balance are recommended just in case.
The first written reference to the breed was in 1814 (“Instructions to Young Sportsmen” by Colonel Peter Hawker),[11] the first painting in 1823 (“Cora. A Labrador Bitch” by Edwin Landseer),[11] and the first photograph in 1856 (the Earl of Home’s dog “Nell”, described both as a Labrador and a St. Johns dog).[19] By 1870 the name Labrador Retriever became common in England.[11] The first yellow Labrador on record was born in 1899 (Ben of Hyde, kennels of Major C.J. Radclyffe),[11] and the breed was recognised by The Kennel Club in 1903. The first American Kennel Club (AKC) registration was in 1917.[11] The chocolate Labrador emerged in the 1930s,[11] although liver spotted pups were documented being born at the Buccleuch kennels in 1892.[11] The first dog to appear on the cover of Life Magazine was a black Labrador Retriever called ‘Blind of Arden’ in the December, 12th, 1938 issue. The St. John’s dog survived until the early 1980s, the last two individuals being photographed in old age around 1981.[19]
