WE DO NOT HAVE CATS IN OUR FOSTER HOMES SO MOST OF THE TIME WE DON’T KNOW HOW THE DOGS ARE WITH CATS. UNLESS WE HAVE A NOTATION ON THE INDIVIDUAL DOG BIO THAT THEY HAVE PREVIOUSLY LIVED WITH A CAT OR SHELTER TESTS SHOW THEY IGNORE THE CAT THEN WE DON’T KNOW HOW THEY ARE WITH CATS.

Hi Niki, I read your post and I’m hoping you might give me some advice. We have an 18 month old male Labradoodle and are looking into getting a Labrador puppy. If you wouldn’t mind I’d love to know the sex of your dogs, how old they are, and how well they get along.

A favourite disability assistance breed in many countries, Labradors are frequently trained to aid the blind, those who have autism, to act as a therapy dog, or to perform screening and detection work for law enforcement and other official agencies.[9] Additionally, they are prized as sporting and hunting dogs.[11]

Most puppies will not show aggression at a very early age. This is mostly a learned behavior over time. Hence, when small puppies bite, they bite out of fun, playfulness, teething, or the need to have something in their mouth. At first it may be cute, but it should be corrected immediately since it will not be as cute when they are a 70 lbs. adult Lab! Puppies should be taught from a young age never to mouth or bite humans. How do you do this? Well, based on our experience, there are a couple of steps to curb this type of behavior. When a puppy bites, first use a sharp tone and say “No Bite!” If the puppy continues to mouth or bite, grab the back of its collar with your other hand and give a quick/sharp tug and say “No Bite!” again. The tug action should only serve to startle the pup and not hurt it in any way. It may take 4-5 times in a row of performing the tug action while saying “No Bite!”, but the pup will understand quickly that when it bites you, it receives something it doesn’t like (the tug action).

With an adult, you know more about what you’re getting in terms of personality and health and you can find adults through breeders or shelters. If you are interested in acquiring an older dog through breeders, ask them about purchasing a retired show dog or if they know of an adult dog who needs a new home. If you want to adopt a dog, read the advice below on how to do that.

Labs made their way back to North America in the early 20 th century, imported by American sportsmen who admired their adaptability and work ethic. Since then, the breed’s popularity has gone up, up, up. In 1997, a chocolate Lab pup named Buddy became the first Labrador Retriever to make the White House his home.

If you want a puppy, you can avoid some negative traits by choosing the right breeder and the right puppy. Unfortunately, you usually can’t tell whether a puppy has inherited temperament or health problems until he grows up.

So how did the affable, otter-tailed Lab become the nation’s No. 1 purebred dog? Its ascent may have something to do with the supersizing of the American home. Prior to the Labrador’s reign, the cocker spaniel held the AKC’s top spot for eight years; before that, the poodle was No. 1 for a remarkable quarter-century. Labs, which can weigh more than 80 pounds and measure 25 inches from paw to shoulder, are Goliaths compared to these breeds. Even the standard poodle, which is bigger than the miniature or toy poodle and can be almost as tall as a Lab, usually weighs 15 to 20 pounds less. And Labs are an infamously rambunctious breed; they need more space to frolic and flourish than poodles or cocker spaniels.

Jack Vanderwyk traces the origins of all Chocolate Labradors listed on the LabradorNet database (some 34,000 Labrador dogs of all shades) to eight original bloodlines. However, the shade was not seen as a distinct colour until the 20th century; before then, according to Vanderwyk, such dogs can be traced but were not registered. A degree of crossbreeding with Flatcoat or Chesapeake Bay retrievers was also documented in the early 20th century, prior to recognition. Chocolate Labradors were also well established in the early 20th century at the kennels of the Earl of Feversham, and Lady Ward of Chiltonfoliat.[25]

Interest in the darker shades of gold and fox red were re-established by English breeders in the 1980s, and three dogs were instrumental in this change: Balrion King Frost (black, born c. 1976) who consistently sired “very dark yellow” offspring and is credited as having “the biggest influence in the re-development of the fox red shade”,[23] and his great-grandson, the likewise famous Wynfaul Tabasco (b. 1986),[24] described as “the father of the modern fox red Labrador”, and the only modern fox red Show Champion in the UK. Other dogs, such as Red Alert and Scrimshaw Placido Flamingo, are also credited with passing on the genes into more than one renowned bloodline.[23]

High energy when young. Young Labrador Retrievers (up to two or three years old) romp and jump with vigor. That means things can go flying. If you have toddlers, or if you or anyone who lives with you is infirm, consider adopting an adult Labrador Retriever from a rescue group. Adults have a more settled temperament and you can specifically look for a calm one.

The Labrador Retriever has consistently ranked as the most popular purebred dog in the United States for more than 10 years, according to the American Kennel Club. The AKC registers more than a hundred thousand new Labrador Retrievers each year, but when you take into account all the Labs never registered at all, or registered with another organization such as the United Kennel Club, the popularity of this stable, family-friendly dog is truly staggering.

5. Labradorian is a universal language. I have traveled the world. I can be in a foreign country where I don’t even speak the language but when I see a Lab I can usually pull my cell phone out and show the human a picture of my Labs and they understand that I need to sit down with their Lab and get licked and loved on. All truly civilized societies have Labs.

A nice Lab puppy can usually be purchased for $700 to $1,500. For this price you should expect the puppies to have been raised in a clean environment, from parents with health clearances and show or field championships to prove that they are good specimens of the breed. Puppies have been temperament tested, vetted, dewormed, and socialized to give them a healthy, confident start in life.

They first came to Europe around 200 years ago when those trawlers docked at Poole in Dorset on their way back to Portugal, and this is where these ‘Little Newfoundland’ dogs were first sighted in Britain. Actually the name Labrador is slightly confusing.

Because of Grace I started training hunting retrievers and began my voyage on breeding top bred and fully tested Labradors. I owe so much to her. If I did not have my other 4 legged “angels” to love and tend to I could die of a broken heart. Grace was my rock…

Jump up ^ “Hero dog to the rescue”. Petersfield Herald. June 4, 2001. Archived from the original on September 29, 2007. The pair have appeared on television all over the country demonstrating how specially trained dogs can help profoundly disabled people. This week, as they recovered from their ordeal at the Steep home of Canine Partners for Independence, the group who trained Endal, Allen praised his four legged companion: “We’ve given so many demonstrations on how Endal should go into action if I fall out of my wheelchair but last Thursday Endal did it for real” … Endal was voted Dog of the Millennium by Dogs Today readers and Beta Pet Foods, Dog of the Year by the charities Pro Dogs and Pets As Therapy, and was the first ever winner of the Golden Bonio Award.

Size – American Labs generally run larger (weight wise) than their British counterparts and are, on average, 10-20 pounds heavier than British Labs. The British Labs will generally run 50-70 pounds depending on whether you have a male or female, while American Labs are typically 60-90 pounds.

Short, thick, dense and weather resistant coat in black, yellow, chocolate. There are sometimes other variations of colors that occur from certain types of breeding. However, these colors are not recognized by the AKC therefore not following the best breeding practices for Labrador Retrievers.

The 2008 tearjerker “Marley and Me” told the story of a rambunctious Labrador Retriever puppy and his influence on his family. Marley was played by a Lab named Jonah, who stole the film from co-starts Jennifer Aniston and Owen Wilson.

  1. hello!! i have a yellow lab luffy(named after the manga character monkey d. luffy), he is adorable and fun and he acts like the character he is named after . just like a ball of energy he comes and lightens the house . he is a sweetheart to my grandparents who were scared of dogs earlier on .. he has become the most integral part of the family . and we all love him dearly
Side note – he’s a happy, active and sweet boy. No other behavioural issues other than his desire to consume other dog’s poop at times. We supplement his current Orijen diet with enzymes and probiotics.
