High energy when young. Young Labrador Retrievers (up to two or three years old) romp and jump with vigor. That means things can go flying. If you have toddlers, or if you or anyone who lives with you is infirm, consider adopting an adult Labrador Retriever from a rescue group. Adults have a more settled temperament and you can specifically look for a calm one.
With an adult, you know more about what you’re getting in terms of personality and health and you can find adults through breeders or shelters. If you are interested in acquiring an older dog through breeders, ask them about purchasing a retired show dog or if they know of an adult dog who needs a new home. If you want to adopt a dog, read the advice below on how to do that.

Got friends who are constantly busting out their phones to take photos of their Labs? Maybe they even use those cellular devices to FaceTime with their four-legged friends when they’re apart. Hey, we don’t judge. But we do believe they’d love a fetching (and protective) phone case featuring a drawing of a puppy like this one!
The most excellent dog will have ears long enough to tie in a bow above its head, and a coat you can lose your hand in. It will be big enough that a child will dream of riding it, but small enough that a smaller child won’t be scared of it at all. It will be quick to learn a new trick, but quicker to forget it in front of all your friends. It will have the silhouette you think of whenever you think of the word “dog” – or it will cast an amusing shadow, like edamame or a loaf of bread. One day, when it is bored, it will roll your hallway carpet up into a perfect cylinder and you’ll have no idea how.
Labrador retrievers have a long history of being service dogs, whether by detecting contraband or acting as sight dogs or helping with day-to-day tasks. Labs have been shown to have the most success as guide dogs worldwide. Guide Dogs of America reports that 70% of their guide dogs are Labs.
Not every Labrador visit to the vet is for a genetic problem. Broken toes and torn toenails, cuts and scrapes, and foxtails embedded in the skin are just another day at the office for these big, active dogs. And like human athletes, Labrador Retrievers are prone to anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) tears. The cause of these types of injuries is not yet clear. Researchers are looking into whether anatomy or genetics are predisposing factors.
Pippa Mattinson is the best selling author of several books on dogs. She is the founder of the Labrador Site and a regular contributor. She is passionate about helping people enjoy their Labradors and lives in Hampshire with her husband and four dogs.
Labs are smart and highly trainable, but they don’t just magically turn into great dogs. Any dog, no matter how nice, can develop obnoxious levels of barking, digging, countersurfing and other undesirable behaviors if he is bored, untrained or unsupervised. And any dog can be a trial to live with during adolescence. In the case of the Lab, the “teen” years can start at six months and continue until the dog is about three years old.
By the early 1880s the original Buccleuch strain had all but died out, just six decades on from those original purchases on the Clyde. This could well have signalled the end of the Scottish lineage of the Labrador, were it not for the third Earl of Malmesbury, who ‘gave the duke a pair, descended from our own imported dogs’ and the bloodline was continued when they were mated with the duke’s dogs.
My nine month old lab came into my life when I was about to give up n depressed..and now everyday is like a new gift of happiness thanks to his pranks and loving antics. Cant imagine life without him. He’s always with me wherever I go.
No tanks for Trump: Pentagon planners tell the President that his controversial Veteran’s Day military parade through the streets of Washington can’t include armored vehicles… but he can have an Air Force flyover
Labradors tend to like to swim, due to their origins as waterfowl hunting companion and also love to chase and retrieve. They are sociable with other dogs, so will need regular play-dates at the park and would not be suitable for long periods of solitude. For working families a second dog would be ideal.
Labra-snores are fine, but the best thing that can be said about them is that you know exactly what you’re going to get. It’s like buying a vanilla ice cream cone or a brand-new Toyota Corolla: is it possible that you may not be a very interesting person?

At 4-months-old Zephyr is already excelling at being a Colorado dog! Whether we’re hiking in the mountains, swimming of any kind, anywhere, or just walking around downtown Denver, he is everything we hoped for and more! He’s smart as a whip, athletic, eager to learn, and always ready for a new adventure! His head is developing beautifully and his body is already becoming lean and muscular. Everywhere we go people stop and admire him and comment on his good looks
Our third child Willem was stillborn last year. It was the worst week of my life, but it was then that we decided to get a puppy. Maggi had reached the grand old age of 14 and Ludo and Iona, now five and four, were both desperate for a young dog with energy. There was never a question of breed. It would be a Lab.

It is important that your Lab start learning his manners when he is young. Spend lots of time with him from an early age so he is comfortable with you. Roll him over, touch his feet, look at his teeth, and brush him gently. This will help him get used to being handled and he will be a better companion when he is older.
Endal wearing his PDSA Gold Medal. Endal, during a 2001 emergency, saved a man, retrieved his mobile phone from beneath the car, fetched a blanket and covered him, and then ran to a nearby hotel to obtain help.
To determine the correct collar size, you will need to measure your dog’s neck. For a regular day- to-day collar, use a fabric tape measure and measure by wrapping it comfortably around the base of your dog’s neck, with enough room to fit three fingers in between the tape and your dog. For a control collar, you will need to take another measurement at the top of the neck, directly behind the ears, to correspond with the size of the collar in the closed position. Once you have taken these measurements, let our Orvis Pet Experts help you select the right collar size.
I’ve since had three Labradors in my life, and what attracts me most is that happy-go-lucky, bouncy, tail-wagging demeanour. They project a euphoria I find contagious. It’s a refreshing antithesis to the cold modern world, and part of the reason I decided to write a book about these magnificent creatures.
You can reduce hair-fall with daily brushing and ensuring their diet is rich in proteins and oils to support skin health and promote hair retention. Apart from daily brushing Labradors are considered relatively low maintenance when it comes to grooming.
At 22-24 inches in height and 60-75 pounds in weight for males, and 21-23 inches and 55-70 pounds for females, Labrador retrievers are the perfect size for an active family: Not too big and not too small. Given the right amount of exercise, Labs do okay in an apartment but are best suited for a home with a medium-sized yard.
