They’re also outgoing. Other breeds such as greyhounds or whippets, for example, are more timid. While I like to think I share plenty of their traits, the Labrador’s lack of shyness is perhaps the one big difference between myself and the breed. People are surprised to hear it, but I am not naturally confident and have bouts of shyness. Labradors are shy of no one. They are will greet all strangers by brandishing a pair of socks and sitting down next to them. I’m not sure if this is done in the hope of food and affection or if it is simply their nature to please, but it is a universal trait.
By the early 1880s the original Buccleuch strain had all but died out, just six decades on from those original purchases on the Clyde. This could well have signalled the end of the Scottish lineage of the Labrador, were it not for the third Earl of Malmesbury, who ‘gave the duke a pair, descended from our own imported dogs’ and the bloodline was continued when they were mated with the duke’s dogs.
I have been told by many lab enthusiasts that by far, chocolate labs are way more energetic. I don’t think the rule always applies – but I certainly think genetics play a role. Black is the most common and dominant genetic colour, with yellow coming in second. These two colours will be found in almost every litter, but chocolate is more rare, and thus has to planned by the breeder. Because of this, temperament isn’t always considered to be the most important factor because the breeder wants chocolate. When you breed for looks rather than temperament and soundness, that can sometimes affect the energy levels and overall temperament of the animal. It is also not uncommon for breeders to breed two chocolates together, which supposedly isn’t always advisable; this also can play a role.

Labrador Retrievers are often categorised in one of two ways: English labs or American labs. The differences are principally behavioural, though there are differences in appearance as well. Behaviorally, English labs tend to be more easily trainable, and are often considered better for non-professional owners to keep as pets or hunting companions. American labs tend to be more energetic and, having been bred to compete in field trials, are better suited for professional owners with more experience and time to devote to training. In terms of appearance, English labs tend to more prominently exhibit the ‘blocky’ heads for which Labrador Retrievers are known, whereas American labs tend to be leaner and longer-legged.
I love my ellie so much. I’ve had her since she was a puppy and is now 14 years old. She has been my rock over the years I can always rely on her to make me smile and cheer me up when I’m feeling down. She just knows when something is wrong and within a minute makes you happy again. Ellie is my best friend she’s like a sister to me and a mum as I am unfortunate to not have contact with my mum. Ellie is a good listener, and she loves to give you sloppy kisses and follow you around the house. With out fail every morning she’s waiting at the bottom of the stairs to greet me she tries to climb the stairs to get close to you and ten as soon as I’m near her she jumps backgrounds onto her back legs I always say ellie be careful your not a puppy anymore you should be careful and taking it easy at your age haha. We have so many good memories and I make sure I take as many pictures and videos of her as possible like her opening her present on her 14th birthday and her playing outside in the sunshine. I could go on forever writing about my dog Ellie what a great breed labs are eh.

Unfortunately cows milk is not well suited to puppies and may give your puppy diarrhoea. You can buy replacement bitches milk but an eight week old puppy is actually weaned and doesn’t need milk at all.

At around the same time, the fifth Duke of Buccleuch and his brother Lord John Scott started importing dogs from a Newfoundland fishing fleet that sailed into the River Clyde to use as gundogs on the Queensberry estates in the Scottish borders. They had also realised what an extraordinary dog the Labrador was and so established their own kennels in around 1835.
Black Labs, Chocolate Labs and Yellow Labs, portrayed by Nigel Hemming. Nigel Hemming is regarded by many as one of the country’s leading painters of working dogs – his images often bearing a narrative theme. He says that he tries to paint pictures not simply of dogs, but about them. The appeal of his work led to his being presented with the Fine Art Trade Guild Published Artist Award in 1996.
11. Labradors thrive on encouragement. Positive reinforcement training has been shown to have far better results in modifying a dog’s behavior than harsh training methods. Researchers suggest training your dog well and early on to avoid any problems with aggression.

Amazing that I came upon this website tonight–when truly in need. I’m having a real tough time and awfully torn. Our still beautiful (huge) and regal black lab just turned 15 last week and has become more and more incontinent in the last days. He’s having a harder time getting outside–those rear legs not coordinating. The hardest part is that he’s still eating, enjoying his dog biscuits and wagging his tail for us. He does not seem to be in pain, but I know he doesn’t like falling down or finding himself lying in his urine either. I’m finding consolation in the “why wait for the suffering” comments.. I’m thinking I should do something before lots of family (including little grandchildren)arrive for Easter. But then I can’t believe I’m really thinking this. The thought playing God and deciding his exit is overwhelming. We are fortunate to have a traveling vet in the area who euthanized our previous dog 15 yrs ago—and think I’m ready to give her a call to do the same. I am so, so sad and conflicted!! Any words of wisdom and encouragement would sure be welcomed
The only knock I give this is – As a group, the labs are not the best looking labs I’ve seen. My labs are much better looking than many of these. I’m just saying their are a lot of great looking labs. The guys at Brown Trout could have selected better looking dogs. Some of the labs in the calendar are special, others are not.
Excitable. Labradors are a fun-loving breed. They love to play and are high energy dogs that rely on getting lots of exercise and mental stimulation. They are often very boisterous dogs if not given limits and love people and other dogs.

The AKC describes the Labrador’s temperament as a kind, pleasant, outgoing and tractable nature. Labradors’ sense of smell allows them to home in on almost any scent and follow the path of its origin. They generally stay on the scent until they find it. Navies, military forces and police forces use them as detection dogs to track down smugglers, thieves, terrorists and black marketers. They are known to have a very soft feel to the mouth, as a result of being bred to retrieve game such as waterfowl. They are prone to chewing objects (though they can be trained to abandon this behaviour).

I love Labs because they make you smile. Even when they are bad, I still want to hug them and kiss them and give them cookies. You can have the worst day ever, and come home to two happy, wiggly-waggly Labbies…and all of a sudden you don’t feel mad or sad anymore. I also love them for many other reasons, most of which all of you have already stated. Thank you for letting me share…:)
Labradors are easy to train and they are very social. That means they like people and other animals. Labs are happy to hang out with you and do whatever you are doing. They love to play! Spending as much time as you can with your Labrador will make him the happiest dog on earth. A Lab can truly be your best friend.
