So where did the Labrador actually come from? Their origins are complex, combining Portugal, Newfoundland and Britain in their ancestry. They were originally Canadian fishing dogs, whose ancestors were taken on to work on the Portuguese cod trawlers off the remote Canadian island of Newfoundland.

Coat: The Labrador Retriever’s coat should be short and dense, but not wiry. The coat is water-resistant, so the dog does not get cold when taking to water in the winter. That means that the dog naturally has a slightly dry, oily coat. Acceptable colours are black, yellow, and chocolate.

Whatever they were called, the dogs were known for their keen sense of smell, ability to find downed birds, and speed. British visitors to Newfoundland appreciated the dogs’ abilities and brought them back to England. There, they caught the eye of the Earl of Malmesbury, who acquired some of the water-loving dogs to hunt the swamplands surrounding his estate. The Earl’s son began breeding the dogs and it was he who gave them the name Labrador. The Kennel Club in England made the breed official in 1903.

Inca, who died in 2012 having accompanied me to the island of Taransay when I was a contestant on the BBC’s Castaway programme, my wife’s dog, Maggi, and our new family puppy, Storm, have turned me a barking crazy labrophile. Kind, loyal, diligent, hardworking, biddable, gentle and faithful: I may be biased, but it’s no surprise that the Labrador is by far the most popular breed in the UK and indeed the world. One estimate puts the population in this country at more than 500,000. Jack Russell terriers, the second favourite, number 376,000.

Once a breed gains a foothold, several factors can spur it on. It helps when the dog in question has a lovely temperament, as Labs do. Also, as more and more families opt for a particular breed, dog breeders respond by increasing the number of litters their dogs produce. This practice lowers the price for a puppy, which also helps speed the breed’s adoption along. A breed’s popularity eventually plateaus when it becomes too common, and thus old hat, and the numbers begin to decline sharply once death and old age catch up with the formerly chic pooches. Unfortunately, this process can be accelerated by the excesses of the breeding industry; disreputable puppy producers can rush to breed trendy dogs without much regard for the animals’ health. This has already been a problem with Labs, which often suffer arthritic hips due to inbreeding.
This is an original acrylic painting I did on a 11″ x 14″ canvas. The frame is about .5″ wide. This piece is of a Labrador Retriever dog. I chose a vibrant green for the background. I covered the pain…
12. Labradors always refuse to leave their human’s side. There are countless reports of loyal Labradors who stayed beside their humans when they were sick, injured and even deceased. Remember this when it’s time for your dog to cross the Rainbow Bridge.
The intensity of black pigment on yellow Labradors is controlled by a separate gene independent of the fur colouring. Yellow Labradors usually have black noses, which may gradually turn pink with age (called “snow nose” or “winter nose”). This is due to a reduction in the enzyme tyrosinase which indirectly controls the production of melanin, a dark colouring. Tyrosinase is temperature dependent—hence light colouration can be seasonal, due to cold weather—and is less produced with increasing age two years old onwards. As a result, the nose colour of most yellow Labradors becomes a somewhat pink shade as they grow older.
Delylah is an amazing partner. Alhogh early on I made the mistake of screaming and slapping her. Huge mistake. She now runs from me. And is slow to do her commands. Now she will not come to me outside unless she’s on a leash. Thank you for the information. I will stay calm and not slap her anymore. We’ll see how long it takes her to trust me
My black lab is 4 and a half. We just had to put down our 14 yr old german shepherd a few months ago (his dog, but I still got attached) and that made me appreciate every single day for, hopefully, the next 10 years with my lab. he is my best friend and I cannot imagine life without him by my side. Also, now I am used to having a dog with me and I am worried about what will happen when his time comes that day. will I wait to get a new dog? Should I get a different breed or gender so I don’t feel like I am betraying my best friend?

Hello, We adopted Chase on Monday…he is 99% wonderful with 1 bad habit! His previous owners (returned him to the breeder as they didn’t have “time” for him) taught him to jump up and give them hugs…I’ve never heard of anyone training a dog to jump up but now at 13 months old we have to teach him we do not find this acceptable behaviour…I personally turn my back on him and ignore him…any advice you could offer would be sincerely appreciated.
I’m looking for a family who spends lots of time outdoors, whether it’s the park, beach or backyard. I’m smart, so don’t expect me to always amuse myself, I flourish with training and being kept busy. If you love to run, take me with you. If you like dog parks, I do too.
I just adopted a 3yr old Yellow Lab, called Lucy. She has brought so much joy into my family. She is so gentle with my elderly parents, and loves to play hard with me. Our lives have been enhanced so much by her.
Before individual Labradors can be included in the Canine Health Information Center (CHIC) database, the Labrador Retriever Club requires them to have hip and elbow certifications from the Orthopedic Foundation for Animals (OFA) and certification from the Canine Eye Registry Foundation (CERF).

I’d only been in the area for six months, but everywhere I went in the small college town, people were welcoming and open. Everyone waves when you pas…
Labradors are somewhat prone to hip and elbow dysplasia, especially the larger dogs, though not as much as some other breeds. Hip scores are recommended before breeding and often joint supplements are recommended.
As a brief summary, the primary well documented benefits of raw feeding are great dental health (with self-cleaning teeth), small quantities of virtually odourless poop, and (important for dogs with allergies) a diet free from grains.
