As gundogs to the gentry, Labradors acquired a fashionable status attractive to the aspirational classes. Eager to please and eminently trainable, loyal and lovable, playful and energetic, the Labrador gradually became a great all-rounder, a symbol of social status, a valued working dog to some and a treasured family pet to millions. Now, they must be the most versatile dogs ever. Guide dogs, hearing dogs, police dogs, bomb dogs, drugs sniffer dogs, war dogs, search and rescue dogs, medical detection dogs… There are few canine roles that a Labrador cannot fulfil.
The Vietnam War is the only war in American history in which US war dogs, which were officially classified by the military as “military working dogs,” were not allowed to officially return home after the war. Classified as expendable equipment, of the approximate 4,000 US K-9s deployed to the Vietnam War, it is estimated that only about 200 US war dogs survived Vietnam to be put into service at other outposts stationed overseas. Aside from these 200 or so, the remaining canines who were not killed in action were either euthanised or left behind.

Labradors are powerful and indefatigable swimmers noted for their ability to tolerate the coldest of water for extended periods of time. Their ability to work quietly alongside hunters while watching for birds to fall from the sky, marking where they land, and then using their outstanding nose to find and retrieve dead or wounded birds has made them the king of waterfowl retrievers. They are also used for pointing and flushing and make excellent upland game hunting partners.

As usual, Leslie, you touch our heart with you truthful words. I love labs, because they can cure everything. I love labs because they make very good food warmers and because they can lay their heads in your lap, asking for just a little love while they give you so much more.

I love my lab because she’s kind and has the biggest heart. She wakes me each day for her wee and much needed breakfast. She never misses a meal! She brings me joy each day. There are days were I look at her and say “Bella, ur the reason I keep going”. She completes my life. Best dog / friend / companian I could have ever asked for. I think god must have sent an angel to be there for me, to be my pillar and keep me sane. 🙂

High energy when young. Young Labrador Retrievers (up to two or three years old) romp and jump with vigor. That means things can go flying. If you have toddlers, or if you or anyone who lives with you is infirm, consider adopting an adult Labrador Retriever from a rescue group. Adults have a more settled temperament and you can specifically look for a calm one.
Labs love to put things in their mouths! They have to be watched very carefully when they are young so they don’t eat anything that could be dangerous. They can also eat your mom’s dining room table, so keep an eye on your growing puppy! There’s one thing that almost all Labs want you to know about them – they love to play fetch. Throw a ball and watch them run!
For many people, the act of decorating their home is one of the keenest ways to express personality and style. Upon entering a home, a visitor is immediately struck by its decor, or lack thereof, which…
The only knock I give this is – As a group, the labs are not the best looking labs I’ve seen. My labs are much better looking than many of these. I’m just saying their are a lot of great looking labs. The guys at Brown Trout could have selected better looking dogs. Some of the labs in the calendar are special, others are not.

My 15 year old chocolate lab woke up one morning and could barely walk. Mind you, the day before she was running after tennis balls. Took her to the vet. X-rays showed spurs and arthritis. She also started peeing and pooping. Vet said Kaopectate,WORKED GREAT.
The Lab has a double coat — a soft, insulating undercoat topped with a short, hard, protective outer layer. Labs shed heavily, and brushing them once or twice a week will help keep the fur from flying.
My daughter brought Lucy, a chocolate english lab home January of 2015. Lucy absolutely took everyone’s heart over in short order. Tail always wagging, always ready to play frisbee, fetch, tug of war, swim, take a bath, go for a walk and on and on.
Labradors love people and thrive in a busy family. Their fun-loving nature means they are excellent with other animals whether they be cats or other dogs and in some cases with supervision they can live with the smaller exotic pets (rabbits, reptiles and ferrets), so long as interactions are supervised closely.
OK—honorary mayor. In 1981, a black Labrador combine named Bosco gained the election to be the honorary mayor of Sunol, Calif., Labrador retriever apparel beating out two human candidates for the job. Bosco ran as a “Re’pup’lican” and used the slogan “A bone in each dish, a cat in each tree, and a fireplace hydrant on each nook.” The punny platform appealed to the residents of Sunol, and Bosco remained the mayor till he died in 1994.
This anecdote doesn’t reflect well on me, but I stand by the basic principle. When I was about six or seven years old, deeply interested in dogs (as I continue to be), I asked one of my mum’s colleagues what breed she owned. She said a labrador. “Oh, I don’t like those,” I (reportedly) replied. “They’re common.”

We’re calling it now: Labrador retrievers will be the AKC’s number one most popular dog breed again in 2015, and to show you why they deserve the top spot, here are 14 reasons why Labradors are such awesome dogs:
Canine Epilepsy is a chronic condition characterized by recurrent seizures. Seizures are the result of muscle responses to an abnormal nerve-signal burst from the brain. The cause can be anything that disrupts normal brain circuitry

There have been two dogs in my life, both labradors, first one golden, then one black. Sally was my childhood friend, a constant from before my conscious memory began until the unforgettable day when the vet said it was time to put her down. I was 17 and sobbed all the way to senior camp, playing The Rolling Stones’ Angie on high rotation, supplanting the name Sally for the name Angie in the spirit of teenage melodrama.
