Delylah is an amazing partner. Alhogh early on I made the mistake of screaming and slapping her. Huge mistake. She now runs from me. And is slow to do her commands. Now she will not come to me outside unless she’s on a leash. Thank you for the information. I will stay calm and not slap her anymore. We’ll see how long it takes her to trust me

The great thing about breed rescue groups is that they tend to be very upfront about any health conditions the dogs may have and are a valuable resource for advice. They also often offer fostering opportunities so, with training, you could bring a Bulldog home with you to see what the experience is like.

I used to have a female golden Labrador retreiever called freeway as my beloved soul-mate and true love, I hadn’t had much luck in looking for love until I found her and she was the best thing that ever happened to me in my life, sadly she died almost 11 years ago at the age of 13 & a quarter years.

Think about your favourite people. Now condense their finest traits: gentleness; tendency to observe and listen; sensory delight in the world around; unmitigated joy at communion with nature and intuition for the way you feel. That’s your labrador.

I then rescued a lab puppy 3 years after Candy died. His name was Jackson. He was the best boy that ever was. We lost him when he was 4 to some disease which 3 vets could not diagnose or treat him after surgery and hospitalizations. We miss him so.

Breeders must agree to have all test results, positive or negative, published in the CHIC database. A dog need not receive good or even passing scores on the evaluations to obtain a CHIC number, so CHIC registration alone is not proof of soundness or absence of disease, but all test results are posted on the CHIC website and can be accessed by anyone who wants to check the health of a puppy’s parents. If the breeder tells you she doesn’t need to do those tests because she’s never had problems in her lines and her dogs have been “vet checked,” then you should go find a breeder who is more rigorous about genetic testing.

Bloat and Gastric Volvulus– Large deep-chested breeds are prone to bloat, which is where the stomach rapidly expands with gas and fluid. Bloat can often then lead to torsion or twisting of the stomach, which is rapidly fatal if not treated immediately.

We have an 18 yr old female lab who also lost control over her bladder & bowels. We switched her to boiled chicken & rice (about 60% rice) and she is doing much better. She may have an accident maybe 1 time a week now. We changed her eating schedule as well, she gets 1 1/2 cups of boiled chicken & rice in the morning and 3/4 cup in the evening. Making sure she has plenty of time to go outside & do her business before we leave for work in the morning or before going to bed at night. We also give her Cosequin twice a day (one in the morning & one at night) to help with aches & pains, but please check with your vet before giving your dog any supplements.

My last fury soulmate taught me alot about how to love a dog and how much kindness and true love is a vertue that needs to be kept alive very day and night your with your beloved girl, be it irrespective of a human or otherwise.

This June, my husband and I have lost our almost 12 year old boy Monty to cancer. What did we love the most about him? Everything! My husband brought him over from US when he moved to Germany. Monty was his only friend in a foreign country and never ever got sour with him when he had to stay late in the office. Often the two would just sit their small and at the beginning empty apartment and cry… Five years later when I married the two of them and moved from Serbia to Germany, Monty was everything to me! I didn’t speak a word of German, knew none and was at home the whole day. Often I would burst in tears and this Angel would push my hands away from my face and kiss me until I start laughing… I loved him with every atom of my body and miss him more and more with every second! next Friday we are getting a chocolate Lab (you know, the stupid kind of Lab… ???) and our excitement is enormous! But, the more I think of our life with the future member of our family, the more I miss Monty…

Labradors rather than being from Labrador, originated from Newfoundland. They were originally companions to fishermen in the cold Canadian seas where their short, dense coat was an advantage as it would not attract ice during those freezing winters. When they were brought to the UK they were bred as waterfowl retrievers and were very popular among hunters.

According to a 2011 study, 13 out of 245 Labradors studied were heterozygous for the M264V mutation responsible for the melanistic mask, and one was homozygous. Within the breed, this trait is not visible.[36]

Interest in the darker shades of gold and fox red were re-established by English breeders in the 1980s, and three dogs were instrumental in this change: Balrion King Frost born c. 1976) who consistently sired “very dark yellow” offspring and is credited as having “the biggest influence in the re-development of the fox red shade”,[23] and his great-grandson, the likewise famous Wynfaul Tabasco (b. 1986),[24] described as “the father of the modern fox red Labrador”, and the only modern fox red Show Champion in the UK. Other dogs, such as Red Alert and Scrimshaw Placido Flamingo, are also credited with passing on the genes into more than one renowned bloodline.[23]

If you give him an outlet for his energy, a Lab will be the best dog you could ever have. If you don’t, you’ll be spending all your time and energy repairing holes in the wall, filling in holes in your yard, replacing chewed-up furniture and worse. Not because your Lab is a bad dog but simply because he has found his own special ways to entertain himself. Don’t give him the chance.

The modern Labrador Retriever is an easy-going, easy-to-train dog who comes in three colors: black, yellow and chocolate. He also comes in three different body types, depending on his background and purpose.

Labradors are easy to train and they are very social. That means they like people and other animals. Labs are happy to hang out with you and do whatever you are doing. They love to play! Spending as much time as you can with your Labrador will make him the happiest dog on earth. A Lab can truly be your best friend.

Assistance dogs undertake roles where they may help their caregivers pick up dropped items, answer the phone, alert if their owner is in trouble, unload the washing machine and press the pedestrian button at traffic lights.

Labradors are generally a fairly robust dog but they are prone to hip dysplasia and obesity. They tend to have an insatiable appetite for food, life and affection, so they would suit a high energy family who has time to take long walks. Labradors also love to swim and trips to the beach.

Raw feeding is quite a big topic, and it is both complicated and simple. Complicated because we tend to worry about the nutrients our dogs are getting and we can’t see a list of ingredients on a meaty bone.

  1. Which is why the Labrador’s increasing popularity may be tied to the advent of exurbs and McMansions. Since 1971, the average size of an American home has risen 55 percent, to 2,320 square feet. Families aren’t having more children to fill up the extra space, so there’s plenty of room for a Labrador to romp around. In Manhattan, meanwhile, where space is at a premium, tiny dachshunds are the most popular breed; the four-legged sausages are No. 6 on the AKC’s nationwide list, with 40,770 registrants compared to 146,692 Labs.
Labradors are medium-large, with males typically weighing 65–80 lb (29–36 kg) and females 55–70 lb (25–32 kg).[26] The majority of the characteristics of this breed, with the exception of colour, are the result of breeding to produce a working retriever.
Affectionate. Labradors love absolutely everyone and thrive in a family where they get lots of attention. They love cuddles, brushing and play and need to be with another dog or their family rather than being left alone for long periods.
We work on a system whereby the owner of the dog to be rehomed continues to keep the dog, if circumstances allow, until the right home is found, as this minimises the dog’s anxiety. If this is not possible and a dog needs to be removed immediately, for whatever reason, we will place him or her in a LRSEC approved kennel.
This is an original acrylic painting I did on a 11″ x 14″ canvas. The frame is about .5″ wide. This piece is of a Labrador Retriever dog. I chose a vibrant green for the background. I covered the pain…
