As a result of specialised breeding there are significant differences between field and trial-bred and show-bred lines of Labradors. In the United States the former are sometimes mistakenly referred to as “American” and the latter as “English” although both field and show types are bred in both countries. In the United Kingdom they are called “Field” and “Show”. Dogs bred for hunting and field-trial work are selected first for working ability, where dogs bred to compete in conformation shows are selected for their conformation to the standards and characteristics sought by judges in the show ring.
An early report by a Colonel Hawker described the dog as “by far the best for any kind of shooting. He is generally black and no bigger than a Pointer, very fine in legs, with short, smooth hair and does not carry his tail so much curled as the other; is extremely quick, running, swimming and fighting….and their sense of smell is hardly to be credited….”

Though you might think of border collies as the quintessential agility dog, Labs are usually recognized as an agile breed. Henry, a lab from Oklahoma, made history by being the first ever retriever to win the AKC’s National Agility title in 2013.
The Labrador Retriever serves many practical and useful purposes. It helps authorities in rescue and detection, the disabled as a guide dog, and hunters in tracking and retrieving water fowl. Yet, its pleasant, even-keeled, fun-loving nature makes it a great family pet. If you’re in search of Labrador Retriever gifts for dog lovers, you will find a wide variety here at Animal Den.
My Lab was my best friend. She never complained. We lost our battle on Sunday. Maybe it wasn’t a loss because She Nala would never give up. I miss her so much. She overcame a stomach flip and took her out of the hospital where I knew she was not making any progress. Once at home she started recovering (home is important). So 2 years later it was time and the hardest decision I’ve had to make. So love your friend as much as possible. Again I miss my best friend.

I just love to spend all my free time with them, playing, goofing around and wrestling, it is so much fun! I have seen so much love and consideration from those babies. Recently I found out that Brandy was born with hip dysplasia and the news just killed me. That day, when I was looking at him and crying, promising that I would do anything to keep him safe and make him feel comfortable, he just licked me, turned his head like a small owl, and smiled at me with his gorgeous green eyes and made me laugh. I just felt that he wanted me not to pity him and tried to cheer me up. I do not think there are many humans now a days who would do such a sweet thing. And Scotch was getting his brother food and drink and allowing him to nip and bite him just for the sake he felt there was something wrong with Brandy, I just cant explain really. I would simply give away my life for my babies, no matter what it takes

I have always enjoyed training animals and getting to know what is important to them. Dogs, particularly Labrador Retrievers, are my first love and predominate my art. I have had dogs most of my life, from wonderful adopted mutts to show quality Labrador Retrievers, and have loved them all! My life revolves around dogs and I would not have it any other way. Know that you are getting my art plus a huge dose of my passion when you choose OtterTail Art.
I love Labs because they make you smile. Even when they are bad, I still want to hug them and kiss them and give them cookies. You can have the worst day ever, and come home to two happy, wiggly-waggly Labbies…and all of a sudden you don’t feel mad or sad anymore. I also love them for many other reasons, most of which all of you have already stated. Thank you for letting me share…:)

The steady temperament of Labradors and their ability to learn make them an ideal breed for search and rescue, detection, and therapy work. They are a very intelligent breed. They are ranked No. 7 in Stanley Coren’s The Intelligence of Dogs. The AKC describes the breed as an ideal family and sporting dog. Their primary working role in the field continues to be that of a hunting retriever.
