During the 1880s, the 3rd Earl of Malmesbury, the 6th Duke of Buccleuch and the 12th Earl of Home collaborated to develop and establish the modern Labrador breed. The dogs Buccleuch Avon and Buccleuch Ned, given by Malmesbury to Buccleuch, were mated with bitches carrying blood from those originally imported by the 5th Duke and the 10th Earl of Home. The offspring are considered to be the ancestors of modern Labradors.
Not too long ago, Labrador retrievers were considered a tad exotic. In the 1950s, the sporty mid-size breed was a suburban rarity, popular mainly among upper-crust Anglophiles who liked the idea of owning a dignified hunting dog. Today, however, Labs are the Levi’s jeans of purebred dogs. They’ve topped the American Kennel Club’s list of registered canines for 12 years straight. And not just topped, but dominated: The number of registered Labs is nearly three times the number of golden retrievers, the second most popular dog on the list.
I fostered a 3 month old Chocolate – Golden cross who is now about to turn 3. I didn’t think there was another home quite good enough for such a wonderful dog that he became a failed foster and is here to stay.
One of the reasons the Labrador Retriever is so popular is their excellent temperament. They are friendly, loving and non-aggressive. These outgoing dogs are playful and always eager to please. As someone once said “A Lab never has a bad day”. Due to their easy-going, non-aggressive nature, Labs do not make good guard dogs. They may bark protectively but unlikely to take things further.

I love my Lab! She’s the sweetest girl ever, love kids, gentle, patient, kind, sweet as can be. We use to have a black lab before April came along but he was hit by a car, he has a special spot under a big tree in our yard, because of him we instantly fell in love with labs. I tell ya, once you get a lab in your life, no other breed will surpass your desire. They become part of your family and you grow to love them as such. God bless them labs.
7. Labradors reduce stress. Labradors have been shown to decrease the risk of heart disease because they motivate people to get outside and take walks. Also the emotional bond owners feel towards their pets reduces their reaction to stress and lowers their heart rate.
The Inheritance of Coat Color in Labrador Retrievers has been the all time favorite project of my Biology students for over 10 years and Im sure your students will love it, too! Its a real-world scenario about inheritance patterns in one of Americas favor
I love My lab, Garth Milo because he is the joy of our life. He actually thinks he is human, he is always by our side, sleeps with us, cuddles with us. He is very emotional and I swear he thinks he is human. he loves the water sooo much and so do we. Garth is our son. LOL Garth is the inspiration for Pups the Traveling Labrador. We wanted Pups to travel the globe and he wants to share what he sees around the globe with others. Pups loves to spread good will and cheer to others. When we get home and hug Garth, all of our troubles are gone.. LABRADORS RULE!!!!!!!!!!!!!
The modern Labrador’s ancestors originated on the island of Newfoundland, now part of the province of Newfoundland and Labrador, Canada. The founding breed of the Labrador was the St. John’s water dog, a breed that emerged through ad-hoc breedings by early settlers of the island in the 16th century. The forebears of the St. John’s Dog are not known but, were likely a random-bred mix of English, Irish, and Portuguese working breeds. The Newfoundland (known then as the Greater Newfoundland) is likely a result of the St. John’s Dog breeding with mastiffs brought to the island by the generations of Portuguese fishermen who had been fishing offshore since the 16th century. The smaller short-coated St. John’s Dog (also known then as the Lesser Newfoundland) was used for retrieval and pulling in nets from the water. These smaller dogs were the forebears of the Labrador Retriever. The white chest, feet, chin, and muzzle – known as tuxedo markings – characteristic of the St. John’s Dog often appear in modern Lab mixes, and will occasionally manifest in Labradors as a small white spot on the chest (known as a medallion) or stray white hairs on the feet or muzzle.
12. Labradors always refuse to leave their human’s side. There are countless reports of loyal Labradors who stayed beside their humans when they were sick, injured and even deceased. Remember this when it’s time for your dog to cross the Rainbow Bridge.

I enjoyed reading all the beautiful stories. My heart was broken Nov.29,2018 when my best Buddy passed suddenly at age 8 1/2. He helped me through some very dark times. Was there for me always. It is 3 months and I cry even writing this. One morning we woke and he didn’t want to stand. I’m handicap and spend most of my day in a recliner or scooter. I can walk some. I mention this because it took every ounce I had to put a towel under him to try & raise him. No can do. I rolled him on a rug and pulled him into a room that I could get down close to him. While I tried for 2 hours to call people I knew to help me. For some reason noone was there. I tried to get the attention of garbage truck drivers, fed ex drivers. But noone. He laid in my arms took deep breaths and passed away. Buddy was my everything. He would get me up when I fell, lay next to me when I was sad or to calm me. Gently kiss my tears away. Steady my when needed. Bring me things I needed (and sometimes things I didn’t need lol) My shadow in being and heart. My niece trained him for me. He was not purchased knowing I would need him for therapy needs. But, when my life took a dramatic change he was there always. Don’t know how to heal from this. He had a strange quirck that we never understood. He could hear/see the white streaks very high in the sky that airplanes left. He would bark at them obsessively. He saw/heard them before we could. We could never hear them & barely see the white steak. Buddy was my everyday companion for my 12+ hours I was aloan everyday & through the rest of the night. Don’t know if color made any difference. Buddy was a red fox color. Loved kids, cats, dogs LIFE. Saved me & my 1 year old grand daughterfrom a person coming into our home by barking a bark I had never heard before until police got there. He was the perfect sweet boy. I lay here today reading all what has been said and my husband wants to take me to look at puppies. My family is worried that I’m so sad without him. But, no new lab regardless the type ‘English or American’ ‘Red fox, black, yellow, chocolate or silver’ will be my ‘Buddy’ But maybe in time it he or she will become a buddy to me. Not sure I’m ready but will look. In any case, in my opinion after owning many dogs in my 60 years. You can’t go won’t with the most beautiful breed as the Labrador.
The high intelligence, initiative and self-direction of Labradors in working roles is exemplified by dogs such as Endal, who during a 2001 emergency placed an unconscious human being in the recovery position, retrieved his mobile phone from beneath the car, fetched a blanket and covered him, barked at nearby dwellings for assistance, and then ran to a nearby hotel to obtain help. A number of Labradors have also been taught to assist their owner in removing money and credit cards from ATMs with prior training.
There is a great deal of variety among Labradors. The following characteristics are typical of the conformation show bred (bench-bred) lines of this breed in the United States and are based on the American Kennel Club standard. Significant differences between UK and US standards are noted.

I lost my black lab Daytona to kidney failure. She was a rescue and the center of my world. It happened very quickly and devastated me. My husband and I decided to join a local rescue and adopted our twin, litter mates, Coco and Wonka. I said I could not do black again so we did chocolate. They have filled a huge whole in my heart. No matter how bad a day they are there to love and kiss and nothing comes better than two.

Our 2 months old Labrador retriever know now how to sit and stay in a place before she eat. She’s adorable and sweet, loves to cuddle and play. She’s also not growling even if we touch her or walk around near her unlike some other dog owners problem. Before I read about this some article about ‘growling while eating for puppies’, I didn’t even know then that growling while eating is unfortunately common for the most of the dogs that means the dog is afraid for their food to take away from them and a simple warning like ”back off!” for them to secure their food from you. I’m also taking away my puppy labs food away from her calmly and give her more treats for being calm and not growling at me for doing that. Truly, Labrador retrievers loves to eat and eat and eat. As long as you gave them proper diet and healthy or high quality dog food there’s no need to worry. But, Labrador can be obese so it’s a must to control their eating habit and give them proper exercise and training. If you’re looking for a lovely affectionate pet, I highly recommend for you to choose Labrador Retriever especially if you have kids at home. Hope this’ll help for some! ps: any kind of dog can be as affectionate to you as you are to them if you are true honest to yourself on giving them your love. peace and love!
According to a 2011 study, 13 out of 245 Labradors studied were heterozygous for the M264V mutation responsible for the melanistic mask, and one was homozygous. Within the breed, this trait is not visible.
In his book Excursions In and About Newfoundland During the Years 1839 and 1840, the geologist Joseph Beete Jukes describes the St. John’s water dog. “A thin, short-haired, black dog came off-shore to us to-day. The animal was of a breed very different from what we understand by the term Newfoundland dog in England. He had a thin, tapering snout, a long thin tail, and rather thin, but powerful legs, with a lank body, – the hair short and smooth.” wrote Jukes. “These are the most abundant dogs in the country…They are no means handsome, but are generally more intelligent and useful than the others…I observed he once or twice put his foot in the water and paddled it about. This foot was white, and Harvey said he did it to “toil” or entice the fish. The whole proceeding struck me as remarkable, more especially as they said he had never been taught anything of the kind.”
Size: Labradors are a medium-large breed. They should be as long from the withers to the base of the tail as they are from the floor to the withers. The AKC standard includes an ideal weight for males of 65–80 lb (29–36 kg) and for females as 55–70 lb (25–32 kg). The guidelines for height vary between the AKC, which gives 22.5 to 24.5 inches (57 to 62 cm) for males and 21.5 to 23.5 inches (55 to 60 cm) for females, The Kennel Club which advises that males should be 56 to 57 centimetres (22 to 22 in) with females between 55 to 56 centimetres (22 to 22 in), and the FCI which quotes a range of 56 to 57 centimetres (22 to 22 in) for males with females ideal at 54 to 56 centimetres (21 to 22 in).

A nice Lab puppy can usually be purchased for $700 to $1,500. For this price you should expect the puppies to have been raised in a clean environment, from parents with health clearances and show or field championships to prove that they are good specimens of the breed. Puppies have been temperament tested, vetted, dewormed, and socialized to give them a healthy, confident start in life.
