Hi I have three dogs a springer spaniel a wire haired daschund and a black lab, they are all great friends. My lab was born with elbow and hip dysphasia ,he is now five,He is such a lively boy and loves to fetch tennis balls,I can’t throw them for him ,as it jars his joints so I spend lots of time hiding them so he can find them.It has been very difficult to stop him running too much and playing with other dogs as he is like most labs very sociable.I have always had recall problems ,I bought your book total recall and found it very helpful ,today he came back to.the whistle while playing with another dog!!!!
Call a pet insurance company and review with them what they pay off with Labradors normally ……… and then factor in my higher prices. Yes, Mother Nature can still throw a curve ball with one of Love’s Labradors pups, but the chances are minimized in comparison to the other 99% Labrador Breeders.

In his book Excursions In and About Newfoundland During the Years 1839 and 1840, the geologist Joseph Beete Jukes describes the St. John’s water dog. “A thin, short-haired, black dog came off-shore to us to-day. The animal was of a breed very different from what we understand by the term Newfoundland dog in England. He had a thin, tapering snout, a long thin tail, and rather thin, but powerful legs, with a lank body, – the hair short and smooth.” wrote Jukes. “These are the most abundant dogs in the country…They are no means handsome, but are generally more intelligent and useful than the others…I observed he once or twice put his foot in the water and paddled it about. This foot was white, and Harvey said he did it to “toil” or entice the fish. The whole proceeding struck me as remarkable, more especially as they said he had never been taught anything of the kind.”
When adopting a Labrador, you will be asked to make a contribution which will be dependant on the age, health and general well being of the dog. Please contact you nearest Area Coordinator for further information.
But despite its popularity, in nearly 140 years of the Westminster Dog Show, a labrador has never been named best in show. It’s one indication that the labrador, while a stalwart of the scene, might not be universally loved – and certainly, the AKC’s result has proved controversial amongst Guardian staff.
All of those characteristics make the Labrador well-suited to a variety of active families. He’s perfect for homes with rowdy older children, but may be a little rambunctious around toddlers, especially as a puppy or young dog. Singles and couples who love the outdoors also match up well with this breed, and his size and even temperament make the Labrador a great companion for active seniors who love to walk and would appreciate a dog who looks intimidating, even if he is more of a lover than a fighter.
My two (well, labrador and Labradoodle) and they are the most caring dogs I have ever meet, they know when something isn’t right and both give you cuddles as if to say all will be ok. I love them to bits!!
The most well known health issues are related to the malformation of hips and elbows ( hip dysplasia and elbow dysplasia, respectively). Eye diseases such as progressive retinal atrophy and cataracts are potential concerns. So is exercise-induced collapse, a muscle abnormality that affects the dog’s strength, stamina and movement. Other health problems that may affect the breed include heart disease, an orthopedic problem called osteochondrosis, panosteitis (growing pains), epilepsy and allergic skin disease.

Interest in the darker shades of gold and fox red were re-established by English breeders in the 1980s, and three dogs were instrumental in this change: Balrion King Frost (black, born c. 1976) who consistently sired “very dark yellow” offspring and is credited as having “the biggest influence in the re-development of the fox red shade”, and his great-grandson, the likewise famous Wynfaul Tabasco (b. 1986), described as “the father of the modern fox red Labrador”, and the only modern fox red Show Champion in the UK. Other dogs, such as Red Alert and Scrimshaw Placido Flamingo, are also credited with passing on the genes into more than one renowned bloodline.
Outside North America and Western Europe, the Labrador arrived later. For example, the Russian Retriever Club traces the arrival of Labradors to the late 1960s, as household pets of diplomats and others in the foreign ministry. The establishment of the breed in the Commonwealth of Independent States (former USSR) was initially hindered by the relatively small numbers of Labradors and great distances involved, leading to difficulty establishing breedings and bloodlines; at the start of the 1980s, home-born dogs were still regularly supplemented by further imports from overseas. Difficulties such as these initially led to Labradors being tacitly cross-bred to other types of retriever. In the 1990s, improved access to overseas shows and bloodlines is said to have helped this situation become regularised.
Size: Labradors are a medium-large breed. They should be as long from the withers to the base of the tail as they are from the floor to the withers. The AKC standard includes an ideal weight for males of 65–80 lb (29–36 kg) and for females as 55–70 lb (25–32 kg). The guidelines for height vary between the AKC, which gives 22.5 to 24.5 inches (57 to 62 cm) for males and 21.5 to 23.5 inches (55 to 60 cm) for females, The Kennel Club which advises that males should be 56 to 57 centimetres (22 to 22 in) with females between 55 to 56 centimetres (22 to 22 in), and the FCI which quotes a range of 56 to 57 centimetres (22 to 22 in) for males with females ideal at 54 to 56 centimetres (21 to 22 in).
The world is absolutely perfect and everything is heaven for a few seconds when I put my head next to my sleeping lab, give her a gentle hug and hold her, relishing her warmth and contentment. The world can’t be any more perfect.
Especially if introduced as puppies, labs are known to generally get along well with other dogs. As with any changes to your family/pack, it’s important to watch for signs of aggression early on. If introducing an adult dog, consider choosing a neutral space such as a park for the first meeting to sidestep any territorial instincts.
Intelligent. These intelligent dogs are very trainable and need at least 2 hours a day of exercise and training when young and continuing on into adult-hood. Without mental stimulation and training they become easily bored and sometimes destructive.
With an adult, you know more about what you’re getting in terms of personality and health and you can find adults through breeders or shelters. If you are interested in acquiring an older dog through breeders, ask them about purchasing a retired show dog or if they know of an adult dog who needs a new home. If you want to adopt a dog, read the advice below on how to do that.

“I have always been interested in working in a unique style, which precludes almost any representational style or historical painting style. Neither did I want to copy anybody or derive a style, even though there are many artist whose work I enjoy. The styles I paint in have taken a while to develop, but I like the idea that people recognize the uniqueness.”
I think many of us choose our dogs on the basis that we think they reflect our own personalities. They are like hairy ambassadors for the people we would like to be and this must be one reason families choose the Labrador as a role model for their children.
Incontinence is also common in old Labs, especially spayed females. However, some forms of incontinence can be treated with medication. Giving both you and your senior Labrador improved quality of life.
Labrador retriever apparel Whatever the dad and mom’ shade, a single litter can embody black, yellow, and chocolate puppies. There are two genes that trigger the pigmentation of the coat, so the variation may be simply as frequent as completely different hair colours in a human household.
