Size – American Labs generally run larger (weight wise) than their British counterparts and are, on average, 10-20 pounds heavier than British Labs. The British Labs will generally run 50-70 pounds depending on whether you have a male or female, while American Labs are typically 60-90 pounds.
Labrador colouration is controlled by multiple genes. It is possible for recessive genes to re-emerge in later generations. Also, there can sometimes be unexpected pigmentation effects to different parts of the body. Pigmentation effects appear in regard to yellow Labradors, and sometimes chocolate, and hence the majority of this section covers pigmentation within the yellow Labrador. The most common places where pigmentation is visible are the nose, lips, gums, feet, tail, and the rims of the eyes, which may be black, brown, light yellow-brown (“liver”, caused by having two genes for chocolate), or several other colours. A Labrador can carry genes for a different colour, for example a black Labrador can carry recessive chocolate and yellow genes, and a yellow Labrador can carry recessive genes for the other two colours. DNA testing can reveal some aspects of these. Less common pigmentations (other than pink) are a fault, not a disqualification, and hence such dogs are still permitted to be shown.
Because PRA in Labrador Retrievers often does not appear until the dog is an adult (sometimes as late as eight years or more), the disease has been difficult to eradicate. If your dog does appear to be losing his sight, you should see your Veterinarian for an eye exam and if he is diagnosed with PRA, inform his breeder.
As a breed’s popularity changes, its image changes as well. Now that Labs are everywhere (and make frequent appearances in the L.L. Bean catalog), they’re seen as a kind of everydog: not an aristocratic accessory, but the perfect family pet. Many consumers have bought Labs on impulse without understanding the full ramifications of having a 70-pound hunter in one’s home—especially if that home has a young child in it. Though playful and friendly by nature, Labs also have a fondness for putting small objects in their mouths, including, on occasion, a toddler’s nice fat leg. (It’s often recommended that families with children under 10 refrain from purchasing Labrador retriever puppies less than 12 months old.)

I didn’t remember life without her; there was no good time to say goodbye. The nap of the fur on her ears, the depths of her brown eyes, her toothy grin; all indelibly marked on my heart. The night when I was eight and she gave birth to seven purebred labrador puppies under our house was the most exciting of my little life.

So the Labrador has gone from being a fisherman’s companion to a specialist wildfowl retriever to the world’s most popular domestic dog. Now, just like Inca, Storm has started joining me as I work but her life is a long way from her ancestors’ who worked those nets off Newfoundland 300 years ago.
It is not only their amazing sense of smell (which can be 10, 000- 100,000 times more sensitive than ours), but their love of a game, intelligence, willingness to please and ability to be constantly motivated by food rewards that makes the Labrador such an ideal working dog.
I have been privileged in life to have had black Labradors for over 20 years. I don’t think I could survive without the love of a black lab by my side. Rosie was our first and was almost 13 when she died. She was the first to come to us and showed me the love of a lab. She was so loyal, loving and giving. Molly died a year ago today. She was 12 and had a long battle with Cushings Disease. Molls was the most softest, sensitive lab ever. She was beautiful in looks and nature. Molls was always slow time and taught me to appreciate life slowly. We are left with little Charlie now 7 years old. She is very naughty and mischievous. Always a tom boy, nothing girlie! Always happy and enthusiastic. The joy a black Labrador is gives is the best thing ever. God bless Moll xxx

My black lab is 4 and a half. We just had to put down our 14 yr old german shepherd a few months ago (his dog, but I still got attached) and that made me appreciate every single day for, hopefully, the next 10 years with my lab. he is my best friend and I cannot imagine life without him by my side. Also, now I am used to having a dog with me and I am worried about what will happen when his time comes that day. will I wait to get a new dog? Should I get a different breed or gender so I don’t feel like I am betraying my best friend?

They’re a little bit crazy. In a nice way. My Labrador, Monty is unpredictable. I can be on the phone and he’ll walk right up to me, and for no reason whatsoever, lick my face then walk away…..kind of a drive-by licking. Weird but I love it!
I fostered a 3 month old Chocolate – Golden cross who is now about to turn 3. I didn’t think there was another home quite good enough for such a wonderful dog that he became a failed foster and is here to stay.

This is for Ponce, the 9 month old labrador puppy who was brutally abused and killed by his owner. Any profits be donated to the Animal Rights Foundation of Florida OR the Labrador Retriever Rescue of Florida.
She would be my luxury item. Dad and I drove the length and breadth of the country in search of the perfect Lab. Too big, too small, bad hips, bad eyes – none of them met our requirements. Finally, through the Labrador Rescue Centre, we tracked down the last of a litter, a little girl I named Inca. It was love at first sight.
