The breed tends to shed hair twice annually or regularly throughout the year in temperate climates.[15] Some Labradors shed considerably; however, individual Labradors vary.[27] Labrador hair is usually short and straight, and the tail is quite broad and strong. The webbed toes of the Labrador Retriever make them excellent swimmers. The webbing between their toes can also serve as a “snowshoe” in colder climates and keep snow from balling up between their toes—a condition that can be painful to other breeds with hair between the toes. Their interwoven coat is also relatively waterproof, providing more assistance for swimming.

An early report by a Colonel Hawker described the dog as “by far the best for any kind of shooting. He is generally black and no bigger than a Pointer, very fine in legs, with short, smooth hair and does not carry his tail so much curled as the other; is extremely quick, running, swimming and fighting….and their sense of smell is hardly to be credited….”[16]

I love labs because of how loyal and loving they are and how they help to heal us as humans I suffer from anxiety having horrific anxiety attacks and panic attacks and the one thing that helped me with this was getting my lab Duncan. We have a great bond and he seems to understand when I am feeling low or anxious and will watch and sit with me doing things to cheer me up. When days are bad in work I am always greeted with a helicopter tail wagging madly when I get home. He loves me for who I am and doesnt mind my extra few pounds gained over Christmas. I love him and am so grateful we found each other – I am lucky to have a lab x

Since most of our dogs are strays and we don’t know their background you MUST have a safe (escape proof) fenced yard at your home for our dog, we won’t adopt to you without it (community yards, invisible and electronic fences will not work for us)!

Labradors can also be a little accident prone due to their high-energy, enthusiastic personality. This enthusiasm extends towards sometimes eating unusual things around the home or at the park, with a high risk of gastroenteritis or surgery for foreign bodies.

Hello, We adopted Chase on Monday…he is 99% wonderful with 1 bad habit! His previous owners (returned him to the breeder as they didn’t have “time” for him) taught him to jump up and give them hugs…I’ve never heard of anyone training a dog to jump up but now at 13 months old we have to teach him we do not find this acceptable behaviour…I personally turn my back on him and ignore him…any advice you could offer would be sincerely appreciated.

I’m looking for a family who spends lots of time outdoors, whether it’s the park, beach or backyard. I’m smart, so don’t expect me to always amuse myself, I flourish with training and being kept busy. If you love to run, take me with you. If you like dog parks, I do too.

Not too long ago, Labrador retrievers were considered a tad exotic. In the 1950s, the sporty mid-size breed was a suburban rarity, popular mainly among upper-crust Anglophiles who liked the idea of owning a dignified hunting dog. Today, however, Labs are the Levi’s jeans of purebred dogs. They’ve topped the American Kennel Club’s list of registered canines for 12 years straight. And not just topped, but dominated: The number of registered Labs is nearly three times the number of golden retrievers, the second most popular dog on the list.

We’re calling it now: Labrador retrievers will be the AKC’s number one most popular dog breed again in 2015, and to show you why they deserve the top spot, here are 14 reasons why Labradors are such awesome dogs:

Labradors are loyal, goofy, fun, kind, and one of America’s Funniest Home Videos’ favorite breeds! Remember, you can submit a clip of your furry companion to find fame on AFV! Give a THUMBS UP and COMMENT for your favorite breed. Labradoooodles. SUBSCRIBE: http://afv.tv/afvofficial

Those traits are the foundation of the Lab’s personality, but each dog puts his own spin on them. Some are serious, some are clowns, some are reserved, some never meet a stranger. You might hear that Lab personalities vary by color, but it’s more likely that a dog’s temperament is affected by the breeder’s goals. Labs from breeders who produce top-winning field-trial dogs are more demanding when it comes to exercise and training. They are unsuited to lying around the house all day while everyone is at work or school. More laid back Labs typically come from a breeder who shows dogs in conformation.

You will love your Chocolate Labrador Retriever. We have an English Chocolate Labrador Female named Snickers. English Chocolates are shorter in size, but still have the broad head. We have an english cream golden retriever, also. What I’ve learned about labs has amazed me. They are so sensitive, and loving. Our golden retriever is very dominant, and the second golden retriever that we’ve owned. Both goldens were extremely dominant. But our chocolate lab female is so sweet. She never meets a stranger, loves and cries for anybody that she sees. When we first got her, about two months or so into owning her, I scolded her for bringing sticks into the yard, while I was trying to mow. I threw a stick at her, not hitting her, but she felt threatened, I guess. She went into our wooded area of the fenced-in backyard, to hide from me. I finished mowing about an hour later, but Snickers never came back down to our house. I went up in the woods to find her, and she was sitting in a corner of the fence crying by herself. She was scared to come back home. I picked her up in my arms, and told her that I would never scold her again. She licked my face all the way back down to the house. When I sat her down, she ran fiercely to Yukon our golden retriever, and then ran back to me, and sat down. I never SCOLDED her again. I love that chocolate lab more than anything in this world. She never had to fear me again. I LOVE CHOCOLATES!!!! Her sweetness has finally rubbed off on our Yukon Boy, Golden Retriever. HER AFFECTIONATENESS IS CONTAGIOUS!!!! Best dog that I have ever owned. Yukon has dropped his dominance, and has learned that Snickers is GOOD, and that he has to be GOOD, TOO!!!! BEST OF LUCK WITH YOUR NEW CHOCOLATE!!!!

Got friends who are constantly busting out their phones to take photos of their Labs? Maybe they even use those cellular devices to FaceTime with their four-legged friends when they’re apart. Hey, we don’t judge. But we do believe they’d love a fetching (and protective) phone case featuring a drawing of a puppy like this one!

The first St. John’s dog was said to be brought to England in or around 1820, but the breed’s reputation had already spread to England; there is a story that the 2nd Earl of Malmesbury saw a St. John’s dog on a fishing boat and immediately made arrangements with traders to have some of these dogs imported to England. These ancestors of the first labradors so impressed the Earl with their skill and ability for retrieving anything within the water and on shore that he devoted his entire kennel to developing and stabilising the breed.[17]

Now, the little guy couldn’t be more handsome, affectionate and incredibly smart. He is now 12 weeks old, arrived 5 days ago and we do not kid you that he is already house trained! He goes to our back deck door and sits patiently for us to open the door and then he goes down the 12 steps, does his business and runs right back up. He learned to go up and down stairs, get house and crate trained in less then a week!

I love to make a connection with anyone who views my art by touching a shared sentiment. I hope it makes you smile. Pets bring us so much joy. That spirit is what I mean to share, celebrate and commemorate.

The most excellent dog will be longer than it is tall, with mountains of scruff about its face. Either that or it will be small and proud and brave, with a tail that points straight up. It will be as neat and tidy as an English squirrel – or it will leave all its fur on your couch, to remind you that you’re terrible at discipline.

I think many of us choose our dogs on the basis that we think they reflect our own personalities. They are like hairy ambassadors for the people we would like to be and this must be one reason families choose the Labrador as a role model for their children.

The Vietnam War is the only war in American history in which US war dogs, which were officially classified by the military as “military working dogs,” were not allowed to officially return home after the war.[87] Classified as expendable equipment, of the approximate 4,000 US K-9s deployed to the Vietnam War, it is estimated that only about 200 US war dogs survived Vietnam to be put into service at other outposts stationed overseas.[88] Aside from these 200 or so, the remaining canines who were not killed in action were either euthanised or left behind.[89]

Our 2 months old Labrador retriever know now how to sit and stay in a place before she eat. She’s adorable and sweet, loves to cuddle and play. She’s also not growling even if we touch her or walk around near her unlike some other dog owners problem. Before I read about this some article about ‘growling while eating for puppies’, I didn’t even know then that growling while eating is unfortunately common for the most of the dogs that means the dog is afraid for their food to take away from them and a simple warning like ”back off!” for them to secure their food from you. I’m also taking away my puppy labs food away from her calmly and give her more treats for being calm and not growling at me for doing that. Truly, Labrador retrievers loves to eat and eat and eat. As long as you gave them proper diet and healthy or high quality dog food there’s no need to worry. But, Labrador can be obese so it’s a must to control their eating habit and give them proper exercise and training. If you’re looking for a lovely affectionate pet, I highly recommend for you to choose Labrador Retriever especially if you have kids at home. Hope this’ll help for some! ps: any kind of dog can be as affectionate to you as you are to them if you are true honest to yourself on giving them your love. peace and love!

Eye problems are also possible in some Labradors, particularly progressive retinal atrophy, cataracts,[65] corneal dystrophy[62] and retinal dysplasia. Dogs which are intended to be bred should be examined by a veterinary ophthalmologist for an eye score.

Delylah is an amazing partner. Alhogh early on I made the mistake of screaming and slapping her. Huge mistake. She now runs from me. And is slow to do her commands. Now she will not come to me outside unless she’s on a leash. Thank you for the information. I will stay calm and not slap her anymore. We’ll see how long it takes her to trust me

Love’s Labradors competes with both the females and the stud labradors to test their soundness, birdiness, steadiness and overall test of time to waterfowl hunting, upland hunting in both flushing and pointing competitions with AKC, HRC and APLA.

In America, chocolate Labradors are quite firmly established in hunting lines. However, it is worth bearing in mind that in the UK, Chocolate Labradors have only recently been achieving awards in the field. Black and yellow Labradors still taking more prominence at least in Field Trial circuits.

Love, love this T-shirt! Nice cut for the women fits not boxey like a men’s design. It’s a thicker feminine style for the women & cannot see through. Washed & hung to dry, didn’t try the dryer yet. No change in the size if you do this & wash in either cold or warm water. It’s a great design of your best friend that you love so much & proud to tell everyone. I started with the white, no imperfections seen. truly believe that this shirt will last longer than others due to the quality. Price is definitely appropriate & affordable. I plan to get more colors for the coming spring/summer!

I enjoyed reading all the beautiful stories. My heart was broken Nov.29,2018 when my best Buddy passed suddenly at age 8 1/2. He helped me through some very dark times. Was there for me always. It is 3 months and I cry even writing this. One morning we woke and he didn’t want to stand. I’m handicap and spend most of my day in a recliner or scooter. I can walk some. I mention this because it took every ounce I had to put a towel under him to try & raise him. No can do. I rolled him on a rug and pulled him into a room that I could get down close to him. While I tried for 2 hours to call people I knew to help me. For some reason noone was there. I tried to get the attention of garbage truck drivers, fed ex drivers. But noone. He laid in my arms took deep breaths and passed away. Buddy was my everything. He would get me up when I fell, lay next to me when I was sad or to calm me. Gently kiss my tears away. Steady my when needed. Bring me things I needed (and sometimes things I didn’t need lol) My shadow in being and heart. My niece trained him for me. He was not purchased knowing I would need him for therapy needs. But, when my life took a dramatic change he was there always. Don’t know how to heal from this. He had a strange quirck that we never understood. He could hear/see the white streaks very high in the sky that airplanes left. He would bark at them obsessively. He saw/heard them before we could. We could never hear them & barely see the white steak. Buddy was my everyday companion for my 12+ hours I was aloan everyday & through the rest of the night. Don’t know if color made any difference. Buddy was a red fox color. Loved kids, cats, dogs LIFE. Saved me & my 1 year old grand daughterfrom a person coming into our home by barking a bark I had never heard before until police got there. He was the perfect sweet boy. I lay here today reading all what has been said and my husband wants to take me to look at puppies. My family is worried that I’m so sad without him. But, no new lab regardless the type ‘English or American’ ‘Red fox, black, yellow, chocolate or silver’ will be my ‘Buddy’ But maybe in time it he or she will become a buddy to me. Not sure I’m ready but will look. In any case, in my opinion after owning many dogs in my 60 years. You can’t go won’t with the most beautiful breed as the Labrador.

Labs are not shy or nervous dogs, which means they are usually not afraid of things. They are usually very good watchdogs and will bark when they hear or see something unusual. When they are not being a watchdog, Labs are friendly, reliable, and trustworthy.

The rest is basic maintenance. Trim the nails every week or two, as needed. They should never get long enough that you hear them clacking on the floor. Long nails can make it uncomfortable for the Lab to walk, and they can get caught on things and tear off. That’s really painful, and it will bleed a lot. Brush the teeth frequently with a vet-approved pet toothpaste for good dental health and fresh breath.

There is more to feeding a dog than just the contents of his food bowl.  Your family needs to be considered as a whole, and the feeding method you choose needs to fit in to your lifestyle and current circumstances.

Labradors as a breed are curious and exploratory and love company, following both people and interesting scents for food, attention, and novelty value. In this way, they can often “vanish” or otherwise become separated from their owners with little fanfare.[47] As a breed they are highly intelligent and capable of intense single-mindedness and focus if motivated or their interest is caught. Therefore, with the right conditions and stimuli, a bored Labrador could “turn into an escape artist par excellence”.[15][48] Many dogs are also stolen.[49] Because of their curious nature and ability to “vanish,” along with the risk of being stolen, a number of dog clubs and rescue organisations (including the UK’s Kennel Club) consider it good practice that Labradors be microchipped, with the owner’s name and address also on their collar and tags.[47][50]

This is a remarkable piece with a special message to those who truly love the special connection between humans and dogs. Each of the four paw prints represents one of the four chambers of the heart. At the time, the River Stour was habitually liable to overflow in winter, creating large watery meadows several feet deep; for half the year it was, as one observer put it, ‘a minor Venice’. No wonder he was fascinated by the amazing water dogs he discovered in nearby Poole – they were excellent at retrieving downed game from the flooded meadows – and he promptly started a breeding programme.

Labradors are very responsive to training, which is why they are often used as sniffer dogs and guide or companion dogs. This highly loveable breed is probably not the best guard dog, as they would more likely greet an intruder with a friendly lick and tail wag.

I recently was chosen by Honie to be her human. I am a disabled veteran with PTSD along with social phobia n severe depression. Honie is seven months old, seventy pounds ,full of love and joy. I love this Labrador Retreiver with all my heart and soul. She is my very smart, obedient…most of the time:) and my reason for facing each day. The animal shelter is where Honoe found me her eyes chose me out of all the other visitors . And the rest of the story continues with hope, joy and love…

Labradors are somewhat prone to hip and elbow dysplasia,[62] especially the larger dogs,[63] though not as much as some other breeds.[64] Hip scores are recommended before breeding and often joint supplements are recommended.

Providing enough exercise and mental stimulation. Labrador Retrievers were developed to be hunting dogs. They are athletic dogs who need regular opportunities to vent their energy and do interesting things. Otherwise they will become bored, which they may express by becoming rambunctious and destructive.

I love my black Lab Samson (aka: Mr Woofkins) because he gives me unconditional love and loyalty. He goes everywhere with me, (except work unfortunately as there are a few people there that could do with a Lab cuddle) and when I wake up in the morning, he is laying snuggled up to me with his head resting on me and gives me lots of face licks to tell me that he wants his breakfast. He makes life worth living, I love my dog more than anything in the world. Thanks Sam for making me happy.

As both the most popular breed by registered ownership and also the most popular breed for assistance dogs in several countries, there have been many notable and famous Labradors since the breed was recognised.

Of the over 4,000 US war dogs serving in the Vietnam War, 232 were killed in action,[93] and 295 US servicemen deployed as “dog handlers” were killed in action.[94] Dog handler Robert W. Hartsock was awarded the Medal of Honor. Six Labrador Retrievers were killed in action while assigned to the 62nd and 63rd US Army Combat Tracking Teams.[95] During the course of the war the US Army lost 204 dogs, while the US Marine Corps and US Air Force lost 13 and 15 dogs, respectively.

Although they will sometimes bark at noise, especially noise from an unseen source (“alarm barking”), Labradors are usually not noisy[15] or territorial. They are often very easygoing and trusting with strangers and therefore are not usually suitable as guard dogs.[15]

2017-18 I will be highly mobile due to competing in waterfowl and upland competitions and placing titles on 13 of my dogs. When ordering a puppy, please understand that I could be anywhere on the West Coast when your puppy is ready to go home. I will make myself as available as possible in California, Oregon and Washington, but mutually agreed upon pickup arrangements will need to be made.

WE DO NOT HAVE CATS IN OUR FOSTER HOMES SO MOST OF THE TIME WE DON’T KNOW HOW THE DOGS ARE WITH CATS. UNLESS WE HAVE A NOTATION ON THE INDIVIDUAL DOG BIO THAT THEY HAVE PREVIOUSLY LIVED WITH A CAT OR SHELTER TESTS SHOW THEY IGNORE THE CAT THEN WE DON’T KNOW HOW THEY ARE WITH CATS.

In November 2000, President Bill Clinton signed into law an amendment that allowed retired US military working dogs (war dogs) to be adopted by personnel outside of the military, leaving the Vietnam War as the only war in US history in which American war dogs never returned home.[88][96]

The genes for coat colour in Labradors mean that black dogs can throw yellow puppies, black puppies or chocolate puppies. If two yellow dogs are mated, they will always have yellow puppies, but if two brown dogs are mated they can have yellow or brown puppies but not black. Often breeders have their dogs genotyped to identify which genes each dog carries, so they can get certain colours. The chocolate colour is the most difficult to get and therefore the rarest of colours.

I have a 4 1/2 month old black lab name GRYFFIN, he is my 3rd Lab in my adult life time and he is my best friend and I have only had him since July of this year. He is smart as hell, very trainable at every level so far. I cannot be happier

Registered Puppies have the guarantee up to 30 months for any Hip and Elbow Dysplasia, PRA-PRCD, RDOSD, EIC, CNM, and Refractory (near sightedness). If any puppy is proven to have any of these diseases, the owner has the option to keep the dog but you must neuter your dog. Most owners have grown attached to their dog and I understand this. I will be happy to give you another puppy out of a similar breeding at your convenience. I strive for the best breeding possible, but as much as I may strive, Mother Nature has her own course and with that being said this means that oddities do happen occasionally. I apologize now if this ever does happen to you. Trust me as much I love these 4-legged Angels on this Earth more so than humans, I will be just as upset if not more, over your dog having anything at all wrong with it.

The most excellent dog will have ears long enough to tie in a bow above its head, and a coat you can lose your hand in. It will be big enough that a child will dream of riding it, but small enough that a smaller child won’t be scared of it at all. It will be quick to learn a new trick, but quicker to forget it in front of all your friends. It will have the silhouette you think of whenever you think of the word “dog” – or it will cast an amusing shadow, like edamame or a loaf of bread. One day, when it is bored, it will roll your hallway carpet up into a perfect cylinder and you’ll have no idea how.

This was a present for my daughter and she loves it. This is the second one I have bought her and it is her favorite T-shirt. I will buy her more when more lab logos are out. This shirt is real quality!

All he wanted was me to lie on his belly and lick my forehead to get better!!! The next day i lost him because a psychopath put poison all over the neighborhood… He was the perfect lab!!!

The Labrador Retriever originated in Newfoundland, Canada and is believed to have descended from the now extinct “St. John’s Water Dog”. Labrador Retriever’s where trained to help retrieve fishing nets from the icy cold waters of the North Atlantic. Their dense, water-repellant coats, swimming skills and hard working nature made them the perfect dog for this task. In the early 19th century, the Duke of Malmesbury began breeding Labrador Retrievers in England. He was also responsible for the name “Labradors”. Labs where first recognized by The British Kennel Club in 1903 and the American Kennel Club in 1917. It is also one of the most popular assistance dog breeds in Australia, Canada, the United Kingdom and the United States and many other countries, as well as being widely used by police and other official bodies for their detection and working abilities.

Before the age of two or three, many Labradors can be extremely active and destructive despite their breed reputation for calm dispositions. It’s in their extended adolescence that many Labradors find appeal in swallowing rocks, socks and Barbie dolls, all of which — and more — have been surgically removed from these dogs.

Giving dogs a second chance proved to be a passion for Over Under founders, and they took it upon themselves to continue helping pups in need. That’s why a portion of sales goes to at-risk dogs in the community. The staff takes it one step further by personalizing their donation; they target each customer’s specific area, allowing them to stretch their dollar and aid as far and wide as possible.

I love my lab because she’s kind and has the biggest heart. She wakes me each day for her wee and much needed breakfast. She never misses a meal! She brings me joy each day. There are days were I look at her and say “Bella, ur the reason I keep going”. She completes my life. Best dog / friend / companian I could have ever asked for. I think god must have sent an angel to be there for me, to be my pillar and keep me sane. 🙂

I also forgot to note that I myself have a black lab mixed with 1/4 golden retriever. His mother was an american “field” bred chocolate lab, so in theory, he should be more energetic than the average english “bench variety” but he is actually quite mellow, and great with children, and the laziest retriever, lol, especially for a one year old. I’m not sure if the golden mellowed him out or what, but compared to other labs I’ve seen his age, he acts like an old man.

Item one: Labs shed. A lot. You’ll have less hair lying around the house if you brush your Lab once or twice a week so that the hair goes onto the brush instead of onto your furniture and clothes. A rubber curry brush and a metal shedding blade or wire slicker brush are your new best friends.

Labs also see veterinarians frequently because they have eaten something they shouldn’t. It’s not unusual for Labs to undergo multiple surgeries to remove hand towels, toys, corn cobs and other items they’ve swallowed that then cause an intestinal blockage.

Good-looking, smart and fun-loving, the Lab has a a lot going for him. He’s large, but not too large, he’s calm and easygoing when he’s not exuberantly fetching a tennis ball or a bird. He’s a do-it-all kind of dog.

Vet insurance is highly encouraged! It is inexpensive and Labradors have their nose down on the ground and are athletes and try things they should NOT!! www.petinsurancereview.com. I personally use Embrace Insurance.

It would be a good thing to walk your Labrador everyday even if he has a large yard. Labs are energetic and enjoy being active, playing games, and participating in activities like flyball, agility, swimming, tracking, and obedience. They especially enjoy ball and retrieving games like fetch.

“I have always been interested in working in a unique style, which precludes almost any representational style or historical painting style. Neither did I want to copy anybody or derive a style, even though there are many artist whose work I enjoy. The styles I paint in have taken a while to develop, but I like the idea that people recognize the uniqueness.”

OK—honorary mayor. In 1981, a black Labrador combine named Bosco gained the election to be the honorary mayor of Sunol, Calif., Labrador retriever apparel beating out two human candidates for the job. Bosco ran as a “Re’pup’lican” and used the slogan “A bone in each dish, a cat in each tree, and a fireplace hydrant on each nook.” The punny platform appealed to the residents of Sunol, and Bosco remained the mayor till he died in 1994.

Hi Pippa, I have a lab couple, the female being fawn and the male black.. (and planning to get the third one).. The one word that describes them aptly would be difficult for me to describe.. Because they are cute, lovely, messy, silly all at the same time.. and they love each other so much as well.. Once when Smokey( the female lab) was ill and wont eat, Boozo (the male one) too stopped his favorite thing to do, ie, eating.. and Smokey wouldn’t sleep without putting her head on Boozo’s back.. So much do they care..They mean the world to me..

Dogs are living, breathing, sentient creatures that each come with their own personality and set of characteristics, just like people. Because we rarely know the backgrounds of the dogs in our program, we can’t make definitive statements about their health or temperaments. We can only provide information about our observations of the dog while it is in our program and our homes. We do not take our dogs to dog parks and generally don’t recommend them for rescue dogs, there are too many unknowns.

3. Labradors may display sudden changes in behavior due to illness. If your dogs are suddenly acting aggressively, or not wanting to walk or eat, it could mean they are sick or injured. Labradors don’t complain like humans, but a change in their regular behavior or routine could indicate there’s something wrong.

Nothing any good comes out on top of a popularity contest. My next dog will either be rescued from a shelter – and probably fall outside of the AKC’s elitist scope – or enormously expensive, with the health problems embedded over centuries of in-breeding to boot. I’ve already starting saving for my Nova Scotia duck tolling retriever.

Their gentle, intelligent nature makes Labrador Retrievers among the most popular dog breeds in the United States and United Kingdom.

Our labrador is 13 years old although he doesn’t look it. He is having the classic signs of ageing: arthritis and some loss of hearing, a new symptom appeared recently. Some nights after we go to sleep he seems to get a bit agitated and disoriented, he paces the floor going back and forth, I’ve tried talking to him and rubbing him gently on his back but it doesn’t help. The Vet gave us a medication for anxiety Alprazolam 1 mg and it does work. I’m reluctant to give it to him regularly so I only use it when he begins to get agitated. We also give him Gloucosamine. I’ll be grateful if you have any comments to share.

Hip Displaysia. Labradors are prone to hip dysplasia, and while more breeders are hip scoring in an attempt to breed out this devastating disease, in some cases it can still occur, particularly with overfeeding at a young age.

When my two kids, Ludo and Iona, were little, they used Inca as a seat. They would inadvertently pull her tail and her ears and place their hands in her mouth to examine her gums and teeth and she would just lie there. I trusted her implicitly. Kindness is built into a Labrador’s nature.

The 2008 tearjerker “Marley and Me” told the story of a rambunctious Labrador Retriever puppy and his influence on his family. Marley was played by a Lab named Jonah, who stole the film from co-starts Jennifer Aniston and Owen Wilson.

I have Two Labs One Chocolate 20Months Old and one golden 9 month old. They are my world I work early and get home early so I’m mostly on my own with them in the day and they make me laugh constantly they are always full of life and always playing and will do anything to make you laugh, they also are so loving and loyal, a couple of months ago my girlfriend and I lost our baby we were both gutted and when we came home our labs wasn’t bouncy and very calm they instantly new when I walked threw the door that they were something wrong, they just followed me about and when we both sat down just came over and laid on us both and comforted us, I think they new that they had lost a part of the family too, later on they got back to there old tricks and made us laugh they were what got me and my girlfriend threw a bad time and I would not change them for the world. they are a brilliant breed and I think I will spend the rest of my life with a lab( or two) by my side…..

As a brief summary, the primary well documented benefits of raw feeding are great dental health (with self-cleaning teeth), small quantities of virtually odourless poop, and (important for dogs with allergies) a diet free from grains.

The brutal, heartbreaking reality of having a dog of course is that we will inevitably outlive our beloved hound. Losing Inca was like losing a limb. She’d had a good life. She lived to 12. I cried for a week. I suffered panic attacks. Only those who have loved a dog will understand the grief. We scattered her ashes in the park and she has a sapling dedicated to her, Inca’s Tree. I hang a Bonio biscuit from it on her birthday each year.

One 19th-century admirer of the dog’s skills was the second Earl of Malmesbury, an MP and keen game sportsman. A large part of his estate at Hurn in Dorset encompassed the floodplain between the River Stour and the River Avon, north east of Bournemouth.

“I see myself as a contemporary expressionist, with surreal influences Whatever my subject matter is, the presentation is clearly contemporary. My goal as an artist is to develop visual mythologies of recognizable subjects and symbols.”

One of the most popular breeds, and rightly so. These Labrador Retriever embroidery designs are available on sweatshirts, polo shirts, jackets, denim shirts, caps, aprons, portfolio bags, and even Christmas stockings.

My two (well, labrador and Labradoodle) and they are the most caring dogs I have ever meet, they know when something isn’t right and both give you cuddles as if to say all will be ok. I love them to bits!!

Labrador Retrievers must be well excercised on a daily basis. Whenever possible, this should take the form of running and swimming. Retrieving is at the top of the list of games that Labradors really enjoy, especially through water such as the beach or even a large outdoor swimming pool.

A colouration known as “Dudley” is also possible. Dudleys are variously defined as yellow Labradors which have unpigmented (pink) noses (LRC), yellow with liver/chocolate pigmentation (AKC), or “flesh coloured” in addition to having the same colour around the rims of the eye, rather than having black or dark brown pigmentation.[15][37] A yellow Labrador with brown or chocolate pigmentation, for example, a brown or chocolate nose, is not necessarily a Dudley, though according to the AKC’s current standard it would be if it has chocolate rims around the eyes (or more accurately of the genotype eebb). Breed standards for Labradors considers a true Dudley to be a disqualifying feature in a conformation show Lab, such as one with a thoroughly pink nose or one lacking in any pigment along with flesh coloured rims around the eyes. True Dudleys extremely rare.[37][38] Breeding in order to correct pigmentation often lacks dependability. Because colour is determined by many genes, some of which are recessive, crossbreeding a pigmentation non-standard yellow Labrador to a black Labrador may not correct the matter or prevent future generations carrying the same recessive genes. For similar reasons, crossbreeding chocolate to yellow Labradors is also often avoided.

They can smell and hear anything, and woof when your car enters the street, long before you turn into the drive. So empathetic, so emotionally perceptive, is the labrador that, it’s said, he or she will mimic their owners’ quirks and neuroses.

Considering that the Labrador Retriever is the most popular dog breed in the United States, it’s no surprise that many of us have a Labrador lover on our shopping lists this holiday season. And that’s perfect, because there’s a wide variety of fun Labrador Retriever-themed products out there.

Have you heard the story of Norman, a blind Labrador retriever, who rescued a drowning teenage girl by following her screams and towing her back to safety? Though it’s an exceptional story, Norman is by no means an exception to the rule as most Labs love to help out. Video of the whole story here.

Over Under Clothing partners with the Labrador Retriever Rescue of Florida, a non-profit organization whose mission is to give labs in need a loving, forever home. They provide a variety of services, from spay and neutering to microchips for tracking to veterinary care.

Labs also see veterinarians frequently because they have eaten something they shouldn’t. It’s not unusual for Labs to undergo multiple surgeries to remove hand towels, toys, corn cobs and other items they’ve swallowed that then cause an intestinal blockage.

At 4 months of age, our own Lab, Dakota, was relaxing in the backyard with me. We both heard a noise from behind us and turned to see a 7-year old boy standing a couple of feet from us. Both of us jumped and both of us were not happy. Even though the boy had come over to see the puppy, he did so in a manner that scared Dakota so badly that she became fearful of any boy around that age. As soon as she sees one, the fur on her back will stand up and she will bark wildly. Is she aggressive? No, she is not. How do we know that? Simply because her tail is wagging wildly as well and she backs away from the boy. In order to combat this fear, we bring her to places with other people in varying ages and when we see a little boy, we ignore her behavior. We then tell the boy to talk to us for a minute while ignoring Dakota’s action. After a minute of us ignoring her, she slowly creeps towards the boy, sniffs him, and then starts to lick his hand. It is only at that point do we allow the boy to pet her. This has been going on for several months now and Dakota is almost perfect around little boys now. This never did turn into fear biting because we worked immediately to reprogram her fear and show her there was nothing to be afraid of. Had we not done so, it could have easily turned into fear biting.

Intelligent but looking for a leader, Labs have been bred to follow human cues, and if they receive the proper training and attention, they make very well-behaved pets that can perform many more commands than “sit”, “stay” and “roll over.”

Aren’t Labs Something?? I bought my first lab, and english chocolate lab female. She was a leftover puppy, from the breeder that we had just bought an English Cream Golden Retriever from. I paid more for the English Cream Golden, than I did for the last chocolate lab that they had. He weighed in at $1,000.00, while little Snickers cost us $650.00. My Wife wanted to give away the English Cream Golden. He’s barky, and was dominant for a while after Snickers came. We had to get a behaviorist to come to our house for 6 weekly sessions. Yukon hated Snickers so much, since we guess, he was here first for about 3 months, before Snickers came. He would growl at me, just trying to wipe off his paws. Leadership exercises got respect back, and now he is a good dog. But Snickers was never mean. Chocolate Labs are so special, and I’ve been told that it’s not just the Chocolates that are great dogs. The black, yellow, chocolate labs are all SWEET!!!! But I’ve only owned this English Chocolate Lab. You’re right, it’s fun to spend all of your free time with the babies. My two dogs are very special, and fun to be with. Dogs are so much more fun to be with than people. Dogs love you no matter what. Dealing with people today, is a rat race. I lease apartments, and dealing with tenants can be a PITA!!!! But when you get home to your RETRIEVERS, you forget all about the stressful day that you just encountered. LOVE THOSE LABS AND GOLDENS!!!!

by September B. Morn, Pam Tanzey (Illustrator). Virtually every aspect of training is covered, including housebreaking and paper training, basic obedience, teaching the animal to obey both verbal commands and hand signals, retrieving, and walking on a leash. Also covered are humane methods of breaking a dog’s bad habits, such as begging, jumping on people, unnecessary barking, and biting or showing other forms of aggressive behavior. The typical Labrador Retriever is relatively easy to train. The author takes readers step-by-step through her method, which emphasizes positive reinforcement. Filled with instructive full-color photos. Paperback, 176 pages.

So the Labrador has gone from being a fisherman’s companion to a specialist wildfowl retriever to the world’s most popular domestic dog. Now, just like Inca, Storm has started joining me as I work but her life is a long way from her ancestors’ who worked those nets off Newfoundland 300 years ago.

Finally, you can avoid some negative traits by training your Labrador Retriever to respect you and by following the 11-step care program in my book, 11 Things You Must Do Right To Keep Your Dog Healthy and Happy.

My nine month old lab came into my life when I was about to give up n depressed..and now everyday is like a new gift of happiness thanks to his pranks and loving antics. Cant imagine life without him. He’s always with me wherever I go.

I breed AKC and HRC Labrador Retriever puppies and as well, offer stud service in yellow, chocolate and black colors. The goal of Love’s Labradors is to produce genetically clean health tested labrador puppies that are superior in good looks, intelligent puppies that have a strong keen sense of smell for the bird, antler sheds, cancer, have strong desire to retrieve, have a built that is structurally sound and balanced, be agile and quick to handle any agility event, flyball or dock dog jumping, have a wonderful disposition that are cuddly, warm and have a sensitive temperment that makes the best family companions at home, RV or traveling.

The tail and coat are designated “distinctive [or distinguishing] features” of the Labrador by both the Kennel Club and AKC.[26][28] The AKC adds that “true Labrador Retriever temperament is as much a hallmark of the breed as the ‘otter’ tail.”[26]

Fortunately for folks afraid of canines, Labrador retriever apparel researchers are growing a machine to do the sniffing. The canines are costly to coach, and might solely scent a sure variety of samples a day, so automating the method can be best. An digital nostril is at the moment in manufacturing to chop out the price of canine coaching.

She never meets a stranger, and loves and cries for anybody that she sees. She never to fear me again.

My black lab is 4 and a half. We just had to put down our 14 yr old german shepherd a few months ago (his dog, but I still got attached) and that made me appreciate every single day for, hopefully, the next 10 years with my lab. he is my best friend and I cannot imagine life without him by my side. Also, now I am used to having a dog with me and I am worried about what will happen when his time comes that day. will I wait to get a new dog? Should I get a different breed or gender so I don’t feel like I am betraying my best friend?

I recently was chosen by Honie to be her human. I am a disabled veteran with PTSD along with social phobia n severe depression. Honie is seven months old, seventy pounds ,full of love and joy. I love this Labrador Retreiver with all my heart and soul. She is my very smart, obedient…most of the time:) and my reason for facing each day. The animal shelter is where Honoe found me her eyes chose me out of all the other visitors . And the rest of the story continues with hope, joy and love…

The Labrador Retriever is one of the most popular breeds in the United States. They were originally bred and used by Newfoundland fishermen to help pull nets and catch stray fish. Hunters later picked them up due to their penchant for “retrieving” game. They are now an adored family pet for their high energy, intelligence, and friendly nature.

Intelligent. These intelligent dogs are very trainable and need at least 2 hours a day of exercise and training when young and continuing on into adult-hood. Without mental stimulation and training they become easily bored and sometimes destructive.

I lost my black lab Daytona to kidney failure. She was a rescue and the center of my world. It happened very quickly and devastated me. My husband and I decided to join a local rescue and adopted our twin, litter mates, Coco and Wonka. I said I could not do black again so we did chocolate. They have filled a huge whole in my heart. No matter how bad a day they are there to love and kiss and nothing comes better than two.

Our third child Willem was stillborn last year. It was the worst week of my life, but it was then that we decided to get a puppy. Maggi had reached the grand old age of 14 and Ludo and Iona, now five and four, were both desperate for a young dog with energy. There was never a question of breed. It would be a Lab.

High energy when young. Young Labrador Retrievers (up to two or three years old) romp and jump with vigor. That means things can go flying. If you have toddlers, or if you or anyone who lives with you is infirm, consider adopting an adult Labrador Retriever from a rescue group. Adults have a more settled temperament and you can specifically look for a calm one.

The most well known health issues are related to the malformation of hips and elbows ( hip dysplasia and elbow dysplasia, respectively). Eye diseases such as progressive retinal atrophy and cataracts are potential concerns. So is exercise-induced collapse, a muscle abnormality that affects the dog’s strength, stamina and movement. Other health problems that may affect the breed include heart disease, an orthopedic problem called osteochondrosis, panosteitis (growing pains), epilepsy and allergic skin disease.

For some reason merchandise with “Chocolate Labs” are hard to find…but you can always find the Yellow & Black. When I found this one I purchased two, one for my husband and one for myself. The quality of the shirt is superb and it’s on the heavier side but not overweight, it runs pretty much true to size and gives you plenty of room to add a turtleneck without feeling confined and the sleeves are generous in length but not too long. The picture on the front is good size & quality. Washes & dries nicely inside out. Very satisfied with purchase.

Labra-snores are fine, but the best thing that can be said about them is that you know exactly what you’re going to get. It’s like buying a vanilla ice cream cone or a brand-new Toyota Corolla: is it possible that you may not be a very interesting person?

Yes they’re great with kids, yes they have an even temperament, yes they’ll eat all your leftovers and minimise your waste like no other dog, but this is the real appeal of the breed – for unbroken meaningful eye contact between the species, labradors are unbeatable.

Labradors also love to play with other dogs, so would suit a multi-dog household or someone who can organise regular play-dates at the park. The one thing Labradors don’t like is being left alone for long periods of time.

I love my lab, because labs seem to see into your mind and respond to us as if they understand what is going on with us. Labs seem to crawl into our soul and be on the same wavelenghth in a weird uncanny way.

We update this page several times per week as our Labs are adopted almost as quickly as they are coming in. You can email us (adopt@labs2loverescue.org) and ask for a copy of our questionnaire, we won’t adopt to you without one.

CHILDREN. They love her, and she loves them! I’d swear she prefers little 2-legged friends to other dogs and every child in the neighbourhood knows her name and loves to throw her ball with her. Labradors are great, gentle, ambassadors for helping those are afraid.

Every dog breed has their own unique characteristics. Sometimes that can make them difficult to identify. Many of our customers are shopping for the dog lover in their life. Matching dog gifts to the real life breed can be tricky. Compare these real life Black Labradors to the dog you are shopping for so you know you have the right breed!

The modern Labrador’s ancestors originated on the island of Newfoundland, now part of the province of Newfoundland and Labrador, Canada. The founding breed of the Labrador was the St. John’s water dog, a breed that emerged through ad-hoc breedings by early settlers of the island in the 16th century. The forebears of the St. John’s Dog are not known but, were likely a random-bred mix of English, Irish, and Portuguese working breeds. The Newfoundland (known then as the Greater Newfoundland) is likely a result of the St. John’s Dog breeding with mastiffs brought to the island by the generations of Portuguese fishermen who had been fishing offshore since the 16th century. The smaller short-coated St. John’s Dog (also known then as the Lesser Newfoundland) was used for retrieval and pulling in nets from the water. These smaller dogs were the forebears of the Labrador Retriever. The white chest, feet, chin, and muzzle – known as tuxedo markings – characteristic of the St. John’s Dog often appear in modern Lab mixes, and will occasionally manifest in Labradors as a small white spot on the chest (known as a medallion) or stray white hairs on the feet or muzzle.

True Dudleys are extremely rare.[37][38] Breeding in order to correct pigmentation often lacks dependability.

Got friends who are constantly busting out their phones to take photos of their Labs? Maybe they even use those cellular devices to FaceTime with their four-legged friends when they’re apart. Hey, we don’t judge. But we do believe they’d love a fetching (and protective) phone case featuring a drawing of a puppy like this one!

hello!! i have a yellow lab luffy(named after the manga character monkey d. luffy), he is adorable and fun and he acts like the character he is named after . just like a ball of energy he comes and lightens the house . he is a sweetheart to my grandparents who were scared of dogs earlier on .. he has become the most integral part of the family . and we all love him dearly

Temperament – The major difference here is one of apparent energy. Both American and British lines produce very social dogs that are playful and intelligent and make excellent companions. My experience has been that the British Labrador generally tends to be somewhat more calm and relaxed. They typically require a softer training hand with less pressure required or desired. American Labs tend to be able to handle a bit more pressure in a training environment. They are naturally more boisterous and tend to exhibit a higher energy level and, consequently, may require more firm correction.

As their name indicates, Labs were bred to retrieve downed prey such as ducks, grouse, rabbits etc. But a dog’s usual instinct is to bite down on flesh. Not so for the Labrador retriever, a breed with incredible control of jaw muscles that can be taught not to bite down. Watch Jake, a yellow Lab, carry a raw egg in his mouth without breaking it.

The Lab has a double coat — a soft, insulating undercoat topped with a short, hard, protective outer layer. Labs shed heavily, and brushing them once or twice a week will help keep the fur from flying.

I have been privileged in life to have had black Labradors for over 20 years. I don’t think I could survive without the love of a black lab by my side. Rosie was our first and was almost 13 when she died. She was the first to come to us and showed me the love of a lab. She was so loyal, loving and giving. Molly died a year ago today. She was 12 and had a long battle with Cushings Disease. Molls was the most softest, sensitive lab ever. She was beautiful in looks and nature. Molls was always slow time and taught me to appreciate life slowly. We are left with little Charlie now 7 years old. She is very naughty and mischievous. Always a tom boy, nothing girlie! Always happy and enthusiastic. The joy a black Labrador is gives is the best thing ever. God bless Moll xxx

Interest in the darker shades of gold and fox red were re-established by English breeders in the 1980s, and three dogs were instrumental in this change: Balrion King Frost (black, born c. 1976) who consistently sired “very dark yellow” offspring and is credited as having “the biggest influence in the re-development of the fox red shade”,[23] and his great-grandson, the likewise famous Wynfaul Tabasco (b. 1986),[24] described as “the father of the modern fox red Labrador”, and the only modern fox red Show Champion in the UK. Other dogs, such as Red Alert and Scrimshaw Placido Flamingo, are also credited with passing on the genes into more than one renowned bloodline.[23]

Remember that after you’ve taken a new puppy into your home, you have the power to protect him from two of the most common health problems: obesity (which makes joint problems even worse) and eating inappropriate objects. Keeping a Lab at an appropriate weight has been proven to add two additional years of life, and close supervision of what he’s chewing on can save you big bucks at the veterinary hospital. Make the most of your preventive abilities to help ensure a healthier dog for life.

I love to make a connection with anyone who views my art by touching a shared sentiment. I hope it makes you smile. Pets bring us so much joy. That spirit is what I mean to share, celebrate and commemorate.

I think many of us choose our dogs on the basis that we think they reflect our own personalities. They are like hairy ambassadors for the people we would like to be and this must be one reason families choose the Labrador as a role model for their children.

That being said, Labradors do have a tendency to roll in the grass or find a muddy pool when outside, so they can get a little smelly. Baths on a weekly to monthly basis can make them a little easier to live with but make sure you use dog shampoos that are pH balanced to their skin to reduce irritation and prevent dryness.

When my two kids, Ludo and Iona, were little, they used Inca as a seat. They would inadvertently pull her tail and her ears and place their hands in her mouth to examine her gums and teeth and she would just lie there. I trusted her implicitly. Kindness is built into a Labrador’s nature.

Hal Herzog, a psychology professor at Western Carolina University, refers to this phenomenon as “cultural drift,” and he believes that parents choose baby names in a similarly imitative fashion. Last year, Herzog and two co-authors published a study of American dog-ownership trends in the Royal Society’s Biology Letters: They concluded that breeds enjoy heydays of approximately 25 years. That time span usually allows for two to three generations of dogs, as the breed transforms from novel to passé. Herzog paid special attention to the rise and fall of the poodle, which at its zenith was even more popular than the Labrador is today: In 1967, there were approximately 250,000 poodles registered in the United States, up from a mere 6,000 in 1952. The number currently stands at 32,671.

I love Labradors because they live life full-out. No holds barred. They are always over-the-moon excited to see you and have no qualms about showing it. Even if one did once dislocate my jaw showing his affection. It was my fault for getting down on the ground, throwing my arms out towards him, and not properly bracing myself for impact. I shoulda known better.

Even though a Labrador’s hair is short, he will shed. Brushing him once a week will help keep the hair in the brush and not on the floor. Brushing also feels good to your dog and helps keep his skin healthy.

So where did the Labrador actually come from? Their origins are complex, combining Portugal, Newfoundland and Britain in their ancestry. They were originally Canadian fishing dogs, whose ancestors were taken on to work on the Portuguese cod trawlers off the remote Canadian island of Newfoundland.

Once a breed gains a foothold, several factors can spur it on. It helps when the dog in question has a lovely temperament, as Labs do. Also, as more and more families opt for a particular breed, dog breeders respond by increasing the number of litters their dogs produce. This practice lowers the price for a puppy, which also helps speed the breed’s adoption along. A breed’s popularity eventually plateaus when it becomes too common, and thus old hat, and the numbers begin to decline sharply once death and old age catch up with the formerly chic pooches. Unfortunately, this process can be accelerated by the excesses of the breeding industry; disreputable producers can rush to breed trendy dogs without much regard for the animals’ health. This has already been a problem with Labs, which often suffer arthritic hips due to inbreeding.

What a profound question. It’s a given thats why I’m on my third one! Labs are the best dog out of all the other breeds. They’re happy, beautiful, fun to be around, great companions for all types of people and they are a wonderful size, not too big or too small. I love my lab so much because she is my “bestest” friend, great listener and boy what a great cuddlier at night!
