The Labrador Retriever has consistently ranked as the most popular purebred dog in the United States for more than 10 years, according to the American Kennel Club. The AKC registers more than a hundred thousand new Labrador Retrievers each year, but when you take into account all the Labs never registered at all, or registered with another organization such as the United Kennel Club, the popularity of this stable, family-friendly dog is truly staggering.
The Inheritance of Coat Color in Labrador Retrievers has been the all time favorite project of my Biology students for over 10 years and Im sure your students will love it, too! Its a real-world scenario about inheritance patterns in one of Americas favor

This sweatshirt is a good quality shirt, true to size and as the title says has a great Black Lab picture on it! It was bought as a gift for someone whose dog looks just like the one on the shirt. She loves the shirt! The shipping was prompt and as promised was here in time for Christmas! The seller has a good professional manner and is reliable enough that I would shop from him again.
They are territorial, have very big woofs and, so, are good watchdogs. But they don’t like to bite and are great with kids. True, one thing – food (term used loosely) – unites them. They are the InSinkErators of doggy-dom – their only shortcoming. But hey, who among us wouldn’t eat a 17.5 kilogram bag of salty treats in one sitting if we thought no-one would find out?
It is important that after the pup stops biting, you replace the object of objection with something it should chew on. As soon as the pup bites down on this other object (toy, bone, etc), praise it using a very happy and higher pitch voice. This practice is considered positive training and instead of teaching the pup what not to do, you are replacing a negative action with a positive action. After a while, you will just have to say “No Bite!” and the pup will automatically release upon command.

My two (well, labrador and Labradoodle) and they are the most caring dogs I have ever meet, they know when something isn’t right and both give you cuddles as if to say all will be ok. I love them to bits!!
9/25/2010 Bode scored 100, received his UKC Rally Obedience 1 title, high score local dog of trial, High score dog in trial with scores 97, 97 and 100 at the UKC SLOWDOG show in Santa Maria, California under Judge Sally Wells.
What a profound question. It’s a given thats why I’m on my third one! Labs are the best dog out of all the other breeds. They’re happy, beautiful, fun to be around, great companions for all types of people and they are a wonderful size, not too big or too small. I love my lab so much because she is my “bestest” friend, great listener and boy what a great cuddlier at night!
I have a question. My lab puppy is 4 months old. She is doing great with housetraining, however, when we have a visitor, or even just one of us coming home she pees. I’m guessing from excitement. I really don’t think she realizes that she’s even doing it. Does anyone else have this problem? And, what can I do about it? Or is there anything? Thanks in advance for any advice.
The breed tends to shed hair twice annually or regularly throughout the year in temperate climates. Some Labradors shed considerably; however, individual Labradors vary. Labrador hair is usually short and straight, and the tail is quite broad and strong. The webbed toes of the Labrador Retriever make them excellent swimmers. The webbing between their toes can also serve as a “snowshoe” in colder climates and keep snow from balling up between their toes—a condition that can be painful to other breeds with hair between the toes. Their interwoven coat is also relatively waterproof, providing more assistance for swimming.
I fostered a 3 month old Chocolate – Golden cross who is now about to turn 3. I didn’t think there was another home quite good enough for such a wonderful dog that he became a failed foster and is here to stay.

Weight Management. Labradors are prone to overeating which can lead to a higher risk of orthopaedic disease (such as a cruciate ligament tear that will set you back $3000-$5000 for surgery) and a shortened life span.
There is no global registry of Labradors, nor is there detailed information on numbers of Labradors living in each country. The countries with the five largest numbers of Labrador registrations as of 2005 are: 1: United Kingdom 2: France and United States (approximately equal), 4: Sweden, 5: Finland. Sweden and Finland have far lower populations than the other three countries, suggesting that as of 2005 these two countries have the highest proportion of Labradors per million people: As there is no global registry for Labradors, it is difficult to ascertain whether there is simply a smaller percentage of people formally registering their animals in countries like the United States, or whether the number of animals per capita is actually smaller.
It is late August and the heather bloom tinges the grouse moor purple and blue. Three wonderful Black Labs wait eagerly at their masters Land Rover. The two younger dogs pant in excitement and anticipation while their older companion – more experienced, having been there many times before – lies and waits more patiently. Nigel Hemming
Affectionate. Labradors love absolutely everyone and thrive in a family where they get lots of attention. They love cuddles, brushing and play and need to be with another dog or their family rather than being left alone for long periods.

The foundational breed of what is now the Labrador Retriever was known as the St. John’s water dog, St. John’s dog, or Lesser Newfoundland. When the dogs were later brought to England, they were named after the geographic area known as “the Labrador” (they were known as Labrador Retrievers because they “retrieved” in the Labrador Sea) or simply Labrador to distinguish them from the larger Newfoundland breed, even though the breed was from the more southern Avalon Peninsula.

I love my chocolate lab Abby whom I’ve had for 10 years. She has traveled with me coast to coast on several occasions. She is the family favorite. Anyone coming home is subject to a very vigorous and joyful greeting…how can anyone live without that? Everymorning I am awakened with a brown furry paw and a wet nose saying “it’s time for breakfast”. My Abby loves food but she loves swimming and running as well…good thing or she would be battling a weight problem. As it is, she is my sweetheart and my life is all the more blessed since she is in my life.
When the time came to get a dog for my own family, there was absolutely no discussion to be entered into; it would be a lab. Rosie was by our sides until my children grew, until she was hit by a car and took 36 hours to die. Her head was in my lap for the longest day during which I cooed and soothed, watching for the time when her tail stopped wagging.
In a nod to their origins as a hunting/fishing breed, Labrador retrievers are classified as part of the AKC sporting group, which means they’re willing to retrieve anything—from downed ducks to that Frisbee you accidentally flung in the bushes.
The first St. John’s dog was said to be brought to England in or around 1820, but the breed’s reputation had already spread to England; there is a story that the 2nd Earl of Malmesbury saw a St. John’s dog on a fishing boat and immediately made arrangements with traders to have some of these dogs imported to England. These ancestors of the first labradors so impressed the Earl with their skill and ability for retrieving anything within the water and on shore that he devoted his entire kennel to developing and stabilising the breed.
