In the early years of the breed through to the mid-20th century, Labradors of a shade we would now call “yellow” were in fact a dark, almost butterscotch, colour (visible in early yellow Labrador photographs). The shade was known as “Golden” until required to be changed by the UK Kennel Club, on the grounds that “Gold” was not actually a colour. Over the 20th century a preference for far lighter shades of yellow through to cream prevailed; until today most yellow Labradors are of this shade. Also fawn has been a common colour in the yellow lab variety.
I love my chocolate lab Willow because she is faithful, funny and so intelligent – with more than a tiny bit of cheekiness! She brightens every day, no matter how bad it has been! I love how every time she sees me she acts like it has been ages, even when it has just been 10 minutes! I should get mad when she tries to jump in the bath with me (!) but I can’t help but laugh when she puts her whole head under the water! How she actually talks to me and my partner when we get home form work, we joke that she is telling us how her day has been and what she has been up to 🙂
But dogs in particular loomed large. We had three golden retrievers – Honey, Liberty and Lexington – my best friends throughout adolescence, my loyal confidants. I could tell them things I couldn’t tell my parents. When I got train-track braces, those dogs were the first to see my metallic smile. When I failed my exams or got rejected by a girl, they were the first to see the trickle of tears down my face.
Delylah is an amazing partner. Alhogh early on I made the mistake of screaming and slapping her. Huge mistake. She now runs from me. And is slow to do her commands. Now she will not come to me outside unless she’s on a leash. Thank you for the information. I will stay calm and not slap her anymore. We’ll see how long it takes her to trust me
The next day, April 3, 2010 at the Kern County Kennel Club Show, Bode earned his first leg toward his Rally Advanced title with a score of 99 points also under Judge Dawn Martin. Bode won his classes both days. Congratulations, Bode! Owner handled by Donna Andersen.
The Labrador breed standard says that temperament is as much a hallmark of the breed as the “otter tail.” The ideal Labrador is kindly, outgoing and tractable, eager to please, and tends not to be aggressive toward people or other animals.
Providing enough exercise and mental stimulation. Labrador Retrievers were developed to be hunting dogs. They are athletic dogs who need regular opportunities to vent their energy and do interesting things. Otherwise they will become bored, which they may express by becoming rambunctious and destructive.
I’m not sure when I first met Labradors but I think it was Poppy and Oscar, who belonged to a dear late friend of mine, Alice Benkert. It was breed love at first sight. The snout and the ears. The body shape and that personality.
Love’s Labradors seeks the best health possible that science and medicine provides for testing so as to prevent any inheritable diseases. My pricing for my dogs and puppies are indicative of the health testing performed on the parents of the puppies. If you care enough for your pup’s overall healthy life, then you should be seeking to purchase your next best companion and hunting partner from Love’s Labradors.
But what attracts me most to Labradors is their happy-go-lucky, bouncy, tail-wagging personalities. They project a euphoria that I find contagious. I have lost count of the number of times I have returned home after a hard day’s work and my spirits are lifted by the tongue-lolling, excited greeting I receive at the front door. It is a refreshing antithesis to the cold modern world.
You will love your Chocolate Labrador Retriever. We have an English Chocolate Labrador Female named Snickers. English Chocolates are shorter in size, but still have the broad head. We have an english cream golden retriever, also. What I’ve learned about labs has amazed me. They are so sensitive, and loving. Our golden retriever is very dominant, and the second golden retriever that we’ve owned. Both goldens were extremely dominant. But our chocolate lab female is so sweet. She never meets a stranger, and loves and cries for anybody that she sees. When we first got her, about two months or so into owning her, I scolded her for bringing sticks into the yard, while I was trying to mow. I threw a stick at her, not hitting her, but she felt threatened, I guess. She went into our wooded area of the fenced-in backyard, to hide from me. I finished mowing about an hour later, but Snickers never came back down to our house. I went up in the woods to find her, and she was sitting in a corner of the fence crying by herself. She was scared to come back home. I picked her up in my arms, and told her that I would never scold her again. She licked my face all the way back down to the house. When I sat her down, she ran fiercely to Yukon our golden retriever, and then ran back to me, and sat down. I never SCOLDED her again. I love that chocolate lab more than anything in this world. She never had to fear me again. I LOVE CHOCOLATES!!!! Her sweetness has finally rubbed off on our Yukon Boy, Golden Retriever. HER AFFECTIONATENESS IS CONTAGIOUS!!!! Best dog that I have ever owned. Yukon has dropped his dominance, and has learned that Snickers is GOOD, and that he has to be GOOD, TOO!!!! BEST OF LUCK WITH YOUR NEW CHOCOLATE!!!!

As with some other breeds, the Conformation (typically “Show”, “English” or “bench”) and the Field (typically “Working” or “American”) lines differ, although both lines are bred in both countries. In general, however, Conformation Labradors tend to be bred as medium-sized dogs, shorter and stockier with fuller faces and a slightly calmer nature than their Field counterparts, which are often bred as taller, lighter-framed dogs, with slightly less broad faces and a slightly longer nose. However, Field Labradors should still be proportional and fit within American Kennel Club standards. With Field Labradors, excessively long noses, thin heads, long legs, and lanky frames are not considered standard. These two types are informal and not codified or standardised; no distinction is made by the AKC or other kennel clubs, but the two types come from different breeding lines. Australian stock also exists; though not seen in the West, they are common in Asia. These dogs are also very good with children.
Of the over 4,000 US war dogs serving in the Vietnam War, 232 were killed in action, and 295 US servicemen deployed as “dog handlers” were killed in action. Dog handler Robert W. Hartsock was awarded the Medal of Honor. Six Labrador Retrievers were killed in action while assigned to the 62nd and 63rd US Army Combat Tracking Teams. During the course of the war the US Army lost 204 dogs, while the US Marine Corps and US Air Force lost 13 and 15 dogs, respectively.

The Labrador Retriever serves many practical and useful purposes. It helps authorities in rescue and detection, the disabled as a guide dog, and hunters in tracking and retrieving water fowl. Yet, its pleasant, even-keeled, fun-loving nature makes it a great family pet. If you’re in search of Labrador Retriever gifts for dog lovers, you will find a wide variety here at Animal Den.

Hip Displaysia. Labradors are prone to hip dysplasia, and while more breeders are hip scoring in an attempt to breed out this devastating disease, in some cases it can still occur, particularly with overfeeding at a young age.
Not all of these conditions are detectable in a growing puppy, and it can be hard to predict whether an animal will be free of these maladies, which is why you must find a reputable breeder who is committed to breeding the healthiest animals possible. They should be able to produce independent certification that the parents of the dog (and grandparents, etc.) have been screened for these defects and deemed healthy for breeding. That’s where health registries come in.
By the early 1880s the original Buccleuch strain had all but died out, just six decades on from those original purchases on the Clyde. This could well have signalled the end of the Scottish lineage of the Labrador, were it not for the third Earl of Malmesbury, who ‘gave the duke a pair, descended from our own imported dogs’ and the bloodline was continued when they were mated with the duke’s dogs.

With the rising costs of fuel and other expenses we are having to limit the distance we travel for our adoptions. Since we bring our dogs to meet their new families we typically will not travel more than 2 hours outside of the Sacramento/Lincoln area and we may add an additional amount (most likely $50.00) to the adoption fee on behalf of the rescue, depending on where you are located. If you haven’t already PLEASE READ THROUGH OUR “ADOPT PAGE” BEFORE YOU CONTACT US (WE RECENTY RAISED OUR ADULT DOG ADOPTION FEE). We are a very small dedicated rescue, we only have two volunteer homes where our dogs live (we prefer to keep it that way). At times there is high demand for our dogs and we try to choose the best fit for our dogs and their adopters.
