Not every Labrador visit to the vet is for a genetic problem. Broken toes and torn toenails, cuts and scrapes, and foxtails embedded in the skin are just another day at the office for these big, active dogs. And like human athletes, Labrador Retrievers are prone to cruciate ligament (ACL) tears. The cause of these types of injuries is not yet clear. Researchers are looking into whether anatomy or genetics are predisposing factors.
The Labrador Retriever is one of the most popular breeds in the United States. They were originally bred and used by Newfoundland fishermen to help pull nets and catch stray fish. Hunters later picked them up due to their penchant for “retrieving” game. They are now an adored family pet for their high energy, intelligence, and friendly nature.
Proper collar fit is vital for your dog’s health and safety, yet many dog owners don’t know how to determine whether their dogs’ collars fit correctly. Choose a collar that allows you to easily slip three fingers into the collar without touching your dog’s fur. Of course, you don’t want the collar to be too loose, but it should be one notch away from being able to slide over your dog’s head.

5. Labradorian is a universal language. I have traveled the world. I can be in a foreign country where I don’t even speak the language but when I see a Lab I can usually pull my cell phone out and show the human a picture of my Labs and they understand that I need to sit down with their Lab and get licked and loved on. All truly civilized societies have Labs.

Giving dogs a second chance proved to be a passion for Over Under founders, and they took it upon themselves to continue helping pups in need. That’s why a portion of sales goes to at-risk dogs in the community. The staff takes it one step further by personalizing their donation; they target each customer’s specific area, allowing them to stretch their dollar and aid as far and wide as possible.
Before individual Labradors can be included in the Canine Health Information Center (CHIC) database, the Labrador Retriever Club requires them to have hip and elbow certifications from the Orthopedic Foundation for Animals (OFA) and certification from the Canine Eye Registry Foundation (CERF).
Generally, Labrador retrievers are a healthy breed. Typical issues can include hip and knee dysplasia, and eye problems, which are all unfortunately common in most dog breeds as they age. You can expect to share 10-12 wonderful years with your Lab.
Dogs are living, breathing, sentient creatures that each come with their own personality and set of characteristics, just like people. Because we rarely know the backgrounds of the dogs in our program, we can’t make definitive statements about their health or temperaments. We can only provide information about our observations of the dog while it is in our program and our homes. We do not take our dogs to dog parks and generally don’t recommend them for rescue dogs, there are too many unknowns.
Labrador retrievers have a long history of being service dogs, whether by detecting contraband or acting as sight dogs or helping people with day-to-day tasks. Labs have been shown to have the most success as guide dogs worldwide. Guide Dogs of America reports that 70% of their guide dogs are Labs.
But the trend toward jumbo dogs doesn’t quite explain why the Labrador retriever is far more popular than other big breeds. The simple answer is that dog owners are mimics: Instead of studying up on breeds that might meet their particular needs, they tend to copy the dog-buying habits of the people down the street.

Please try to be fairly ‘open minded’ about the sex, colour and age of the dog you are looking for. There is certainly no ‘average’ rescue Labrador and both dogs and bitches are loyal and make wonderful companions. Although we maintain a policy of privacy between our owners, we will offer you as much information as possible. A settling in period is essential for rescued dogs and we will support you through this. However, you might expect some difficulties in the early stages. You could be lucky and get a Saint !! Whatever the temperament of your new dog, we recommend that you take him or her to training classes, as this is a good place to learn about each other.
We have one chocolate lab named dutch, he is 2 years old and a wild man. We also have my black lab Riley she is 11 years old, I love her to bits. She isn’t doing so well and has a fatty tumor on her side. It’s going to be a sad day when she is gone.
I love labs because of their big hearts. They are amazing dogs that are so in tune to our human emotions. I love my yellow lab really more than anything. I am my happiest when he is with me, no matter what we are doing.

Personally I think Labradors in general are amazing dogs! Personally I’ve had a black lab cross (which was rescued) we had her for 14 years, an amazing dog well behaved and obedient an absolute pleasure to have her!! Me and my husband got a Labrador puppy (black), (please note we think he is from a puppy farm) he is the most lovely dog you could meet! However if you are a stranger he will go ‘mad’ but will do nothing except bark!!! I love my baby so much, we have 2 very young children and he is so amazing with them, my kids have literally ridden him, pulled his ears, you name it they’ve done it! I woke up today and he had a necklace on, my daughter had been ‘talking’ to him and apparently he wanted it on! He also wanted to watch the iPad haha! Labrador’s WHATEVER colour is irrelevant it really is the upbringing of the dog! Xx
