Unfortunately cows milk is not well suited to puppies and may give your puppy diarrhoea.  You can buy replacement bitches milk but an eight week old puppy is actually weaned and doesn’t need milk at all.

The dogs’ swimming skills were much talked about. They feature in old stories as near-mythical water dogs, rescuers of sailors’ pots, lines and nets in icy waters and blustery gales, big-hearted, eminently trainable and intelligent.

Item two: Labs are water dogs. When your Lab gets wet, and he will, give him a thorough freshwater rinse to remove chlorine, salt or lake muck from his fur, all of which can be drying or otherwise damaging to the coat.

The breed is used in water rescue/lifesaving. It continues in that role today, along with the Leonberger, Newfoundland and Golden Retriever dogs; they are used at the Italian School of Canine Lifeguard.[59]

The intensity of black pigment on yellow Labradors is controlled by a separate gene independent of the fur colouring.[37] Yellow Labradors usually have black noses, which may gradually turn pink with age (called “snow nose” or “winter nose”). This is due to a reduction in the enzyme tyrosinase which indirectly controls the production of melanin, a dark colouring. Tyrosinase is temperature dependent—hence light colouration can be seasonal, due to cold weather—and is less produced with increasing age two years old onwards. As a result, the nose colour of most yellow Labradors becomes a somewhat pink shade as they grow older.[37]

Labrador retrievers have a long history of being service dogs, whether by detecting contraband or acting as sight dogs or helping people with day-to-day tasks. Labs have been shown to have the most success as guide dogs worldwide. Guide Dogs of America reports that 70% of their guide dogs are Labs.

As gundogs to the gentry, Labradors acquired a fashionable status attractive to the aspirational classes. Eager to please and eminently trainable, loyal and lovable, playful and energetic, the Labrador gradually became a great all-rounder, a symbol of social status, a valued working dog to some and a treasured family pet to millions. Now, they must be the most versatile dogs ever. Guide dogs, hearing dogs, police dogs, bomb dogs, drugs sniffer dogs, war dogs, search and rescue dogs, medical detection dogs… There are few canine roles that a Labrador cannot fulfil.

Ken Bailey: “Art and painting always came easy to me. I started painting in the seventh gradeand was quite serious about it from the beginning. My formal art education was through the University of Utah. However my degree was in Geography which has helped me tremendously with my landscapes paintings.”

We became inseparable. Our relationship was made stronger through isolation and the pressures of life on that Outer Hebridean island. When it all became too much for me, Inca and I would retreat together. When, a year later I emerged into the real world, we were a team.

I love my Labs Charlie and Frankie because of their good sense of humour and their super good nature. I call them “my sweet crocodiles”. They are a bit crazy – Charlie is hyperactive just like Marley from the book “Marley and me” – but You just forgive them everything, because they keep on smiling at You so innocently… Real heartbreakers, I say.

Experts have a couple of different theories about how the breed came to be called the Labrador. One is that the name is borrowed from the Spanish word for laborer — labrador — which is certainly a fitting description, or that the breed is related to the dogs that accompanied Portuguese fishermen who trawled the Grand Banks off the coast of Labrador and its neighbor Newfoundland. Those dogs, known as cani di castro laboreiro, performed such tasks as retrieving items from the water, including fish-laden nets, and swimming messages from boat to boat. Sounds like a Lab, all right.

There is no global registry of Labradors, nor is there detailed information on numbers of Labradors living in each country. The countries with the five largest numbers of Labrador registrations as of 2005 are: 1: United Kingdom 2: France and United States (approximately equal), 4: Sweden, 5: Finland.[85][86] Sweden and Finland have far lower populations than the other three countries, suggesting that as of 2005 these two countries have the highest proportion of Labradors per million people: As there is no global registry for Labradors, it is difficult to ascertain whether there is simply a smaller percentage of people formally registering their animals in countries like the United States, or whether the number of animals per capita is actually smaller.

Proper collar fit is vital for your dog’s health and safety, yet many dog owners don’t know how to determine whether their dogs’ collars fit correctly. Choose a collar that allows you to easily slip three fingers into the collar without touching your dog’s fur. Of course, you don’t want the collar to be too loose, but it should be one notch away from being able to slide over your dog’s head.

Although they will sometimes bark at noise, especially noise from an unseen source (“alarm barking”), Labradors are usually not noisy[15] or territorial. They are often very easygoing and trusting with strangers and therefore are not usually suitable as guard dogs.[15]

Labradors are also well known for their role as guide dogs and assistance dogs, where they undergo vigorous training to become companion dogs for blind, mobility impaired or ill humans. Guide Dogs undergo years of training to be able to guide those that are blind or vision impaired.

Labrador Retrievers, more commonly known as Labradors or ‘Labs’, love to be with their family. They are high energy dogs that need lots of exercise and training, particularly when they are young. Being one of the most popular breeds Labradors wear many ‘hats’ from working dog to companion animal. As a breed they are fun-loving, even-tempered and ideal for families that consider their dog to be part of every day life.
