3. Labradors may display sudden changes in behavior due to illness. If your dogs are suddenly acting aggressively, or not wanting to walk or eat, it could mean they are sick or injured. Labradors don’t complain like humans, but a change in their regular behavior or routine could indicate there’s something wrong.
Loyal & devoted, this Chocolate Lab image is from an original acrylic painting, by Custom Portrait Artist Todd Belcher. Todd’s pet portraits feature richly dimensional environments, but most significantly, they seem to magically capture the personality of the subject.
I’ve found yellow labs to be protective and kind in their nature but strong willed and loyal. Black labs have a slightly more playful side, but equally as clever and loyal. The chocolate labs are far more bouncy, thicker set in stature than the black lab and are slightly harder to train and easily excitable. All 3 colours make great dogs, but in my opinion yellow and black labs make best pets.
Not every Labrador visit to the vet is for a genetic problem. Broken toes and torn toenails, cuts and scrapes, and foxtails embedded in the skin are just another day at the office for these big, active dogs. And like human athletes, Labrador Retrievers are prone to anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) tears. The cause of these types of injuries is not yet clear. Researchers are looking into whether anatomy or genetics are predisposing factors.

Purchased this as a Secret Santa gift for a friend of mine who recently lost one of her beloved Golden Retrievers. She absolutely loved it! I loved it as well & am planning to buy another for myself! Excellent quality wine glass. Beautiful etching of the Golden Retriever head!
Wondering if anyone will have had a similar experience as me. My 1.5 year old lab mix is a skinny boy. His mother was from trial stock, so he’s definitely a leaner looking lab – not to mention extremely long, tall and leggy. He’s mixed with a little bit of golden retriever, so if anything, you’d think that would have bulked him out a bit. Anyways, he’s always been super lean. Right now he’s just under 75 lbs, but with his lanky frame, he could easily be 80. He was originally on Wellness Core (large breed kibble), but we kept running into gastro problems with him. Towards the end of his tenure on that food, we actually got him up to 77 lbs, and he was looking great. He was having such frequent diarreah though, that we decided to switch to Royal Canin Gastro food for a while at the suggestion of our vet. I wasn’t thrilled about putting him on it, but I was desperate to get his GI issues under control. Within a week and a half on that food however, he was acting ravenous, and suddenly became a poop eater! I did more research, and decided that he likely needed more protein in his diet. We switched him to Orijen, and at first, it worked wonders. His stools were the best they’ve ever been. A little over a week on the new food however, and I noticed he was losing weight pretty rapidly. I upped the amount slowly, and he suddenly had the runs. I know that the food is super rich, and you’re not supposed to overfeed, but if I don’t, he drops weight like crazy – the opposite issue we wanted. So now, I’m trying to over feed him by only a little, but he’s still losing weight, and sometimes has runny poops. 90% of them are perfect. I supplement with rice a lot to try and get some carbs into him so he’s not so boney.
The first sightings in Britain of the “St John’s dogs” or “Little Newfoundland dogs” were in the late 18th century. The Newfoundland fishing fleet docked regularly at Poole Harbour in Dorset, with its catch of cod and other fish kept on ice in the hold. One day the 2nd Earl of Malmesbury, an MP and keen sportsman, spotted some of the ships’ dogs retrieving fish that had been thrown out and decided that they were exactly what he needed for his “wildfowling” – duck shooting.
Personally I think Labradors in general are amazing dogs! Personally I’ve had a black lab cross (which was rescued) we had her for 14 years, an amazing dog well behaved and obedient an absolute pleasure to have her!! Me and my husband got a Labrador puppy (black), (please note we think he is from a puppy farm) he is the most lovely dog you could meet! However if you are a stranger he will go ‘mad’ but will do nothing except bark!!! I love my baby so much, we have 2 very young children and he is so amazing with them, my kids have literally ridden him, pulled his ears, you name it they’ve done it! I woke up today and he had a necklace on, my daughter had been ‘talking’ to him and apparently he wanted it on! He also wanted to watch the iPad haha! Labrador’s WHATEVER colour is irrelevant it really is the upbringing of the dog! Xx
Labs are not shy or nervous dogs, which means they are usually not afraid of things. They are usually very good watchdogs and will bark when they hear or see something unusual. When they are not being a watchdog, Labs are friendly, reliable, and trustworthy.
At 4 months of age, our own Lab, Dakota, was relaxing in the backyard with me. We both heard a noise from behind us and turned to see a 7-year old boy standing a couple of feet from us. Both of us jumped and both of us were not happy. Even though the boy had come over to see the puppy, he did so in a manner that scared Dakota so badly that she became fearful of any boy around that age. As soon as she sees one, the fur on her back will stand up and she will bark wildly. Is she aggressive? No, she is not. How do we know that? Simply because her tail is wagging wildly as well and she backs away from the boy. In order to combat this fear, we bring her to places with other people in varying ages and when we see a little boy, we ignore her behavior. We then tell the boy to talk to us for a minute while ignoring Dakota’s action. After a minute of us ignoring her, she slowly creeps towards the boy, sniffs him, and then starts to lick his hand. It is only at that point do we allow the boy to pet her. This has been going on for several months now and Dakota is almost perfect around little boys now. This never did turn into fear biting because we worked immediately to reprogram her fear and show her there was nothing to be afraid of. Had we not done so, it could have easily turned into fear biting.
Did you scroll all this way to get facts about labrador gifts? Well you’re in luck, because here they come. There are 10628 labrador gifts for sale on Etsy, and they cost $27.89 on average. The most common labrador gifts material is ceramic. The most popular color? You guessed it: black.
Breeders should sell puppies with a written contract guaranteeing they’ll take back the dog at any time during his life if you become unable to keep him, and with written documentation that both the puppy’s parents (and if possible, his other close relatives) have had their hips, eyes and elbows examined and certified by the appropriate health organizations. Seek out a breeder whose dogs are active in field trials, hunt tests, agility, obedience and other sports that require athleticism and good health, and not just ribbons from the show ring.
I have always enjoyed training animals and getting to know what is important to them. Dogs, particularly Labrador Retrievers, are my first love and predominate my art. I have had dogs most of my life, from wonderful adopted mutts to show quality Labrador Retrievers, and have loved them all! My life revolves around dogs and I would not have it any other way. Know that you are getting my art plus a huge dose of my passion when you choose OtterTail Art.
When picking your new Labrador, you might be looking for an adult rather than a puppy. When rehoming from rescue centers you won’t in all likelihood have a choice of colour, but you will be getting the opportunity to give a lovely Labrador a better life.
I love my ellie so much. I’ve had her since she was a puppy and is now 14 years old. She has been my rock over the years I can always rely on her to make me smile and cheer me up when I’m feeling down. She just knows when something is wrong and within a minute makes you happy again. Ellie is my best friend she’s like a sister to me and a mum as I am unfortunate to not have contact with my mum. Ellie is a good listener, and she loves to give you sloppy kisses and follow you around the house. With out fail every morning she’s waiting at the bottom of the stairs to greet me she tries to climb the stairs to get close to you and ten as soon as I’m near her she jumps backgrounds onto her back legs I always say ellie be careful your not a puppy anymore you should be careful and taking it easy at your age haha. We have so many good memories and I make sure I take as many pictures and videos of her as possible like her opening her present on her 14th birthday and her playing outside in the sunshine. I could go on forever writing about my dog Ellie what a great breed labs are eh.
Good breeders will welcome your questions about temperament, health clearances and what the dogs are like to live with and come right back at you with questions of their own about what you’re looking for in a dog and what kind of life you can provide for him.

The tail and coat are designated “distinctive [or distinguishing] features” of the Labrador by both the Kennel Club and AKC. The AKC adds that “true Labrador Retriever temperament is as much a hallmark of the breed as the ‘otter’ tail.”
They’re also outgoing. Other breeds such as greyhounds or whippets, for example, are more timid. While I like to think I share plenty of their traits, the Labrador’s lack of shyness is perhaps the one big difference between myself and the breed. People are surprised to hear it, but I am not naturally confident and have bouts of shyness. Labradors are shy of no one. They are will greet all strangers by brandishing a pair of socks and sitting down next to them. I’m not sure if this is done in the hope of food and affection or if it is simply their nature to please, but it is a universal trait.

Labradors love people and thrive in a busy family. Their fun-loving nature means they are excellent with other animals whether they be cats or other dogs and in some cases with supervision they can live with the smaller exotic pets (rabbits, reptiles and ferrets), so long as interactions are supervised closely.
